Between Pulse and Stasis: Fragments of Experimental Cinema by Toshio Matsumoto and Takashi Ito. October 16th, 18h - Visual Studies Workshop, Rochester

"How can word and image redefine the limits of film form? OnFilm, in collaboration with the Visual Studies Workshop, invites you to this showcasing of works by Toshio Matsumoto and Takashi Ito. This selection of nine films presents a comprehensive – but by no means exhaustive – series of formal meditations on the material and psychic boundaries of the moving image. Our hope is to present a very specific historiography of Japanese experimental cinema through two figures whose personal and artistic contributions to the medium are as significant as they are imbricated. From Matsumoto’s early reconfigurations of material structures through digital representations of procedural movement to Ito’s chaotically animated procession of still- photographs set against a glitzy pastiche of abstractions, these works invite the viewer to consider the affective and perceptual limits of visual space.

Join us for the second screening of OnFilm’s two-part series on Japanese experimental cinema as we close out our selection of films by Toshio Matsumoto and Takashi Ito in collaboration with VSW."

Monster in Me: Video Work by Cecelia Condit

October 10th, 19h – Visual Studies Workshop, Rochester

“Visual Studies Workshop presents Monster in Me: Video Work by Cecelia Condit, a screening of works from across the four decade career of video artist Cecelia Condit. Her experimental videos are deeply personal, dense with texture, and threaded with wry humor as they explore themes of feminist horror. These videos connect surreal dream spaces to the real, waking world, commenting on everyday cycles of violence.

Condit’s 1983 video Possibly in Michigan recently received a wide recirculation on social media, inspiring new audiences to engage with her unique blend of visceral terror and resilient humor. Condit will be at VSW for conversation after the screening, which will include her most recent video, Monster in Me.

This event is presented in conjunction with Project Space Resident Sabine Gruffat’s Open Studio, 6–9pm”

Had an awesome weekend teaching the Explorations in the Ecotone Field Study Workshop: Foraging for Photo Botanicals with @meredithdavenport and @jeffreykosiorek We spent Saturday at @visualstudiesworkshop discussing the environmental history of the Genesee River and then we hiked the river trail to collect displaced botanicals that can be used to make anthotype photographs. On Sunday, we worked together to make emulsions and coat papers. Anthotypes are a slow exposure process (days, weeks, or months). Hopefully we can share sample images from the workshop later this fall! Thank you to all who participated! It was a great group and another reminder of why relocating back to Rochester was the right move :)

When I went to college, I graduated with my bachelor’s a semester early exclusively so I could move to Alaska for the summer cruising season. I graduated in December 2019 (so you can imagine how that went!)

Before I was accepted at George Mason University, I had also applied to cruise ships because I had my Associates already. I said whoever I heard back from first is what I would do! I was accepted to GMU and offered a position in activities for a cruise in Australia on the same day… I grew up in Henrietta, went to MCC, so Australia being the literal farthest corner on the planet from where I’d spent my whole life? It was a difficult decision. And, I was going to have to leave for Australia with barely 2 weeks notice. And in those 2 weeks I wasn’t just having goodbye parties, I was needing to schedule doctors appts to get updated vaccinations and make sure I was okay to travel across the world for an extended period of time 😅 As you may have guessed, I stuck with moving to Virginia first.

When I told people I was studying tourism, I was told by many I could only be a travel agent and that I probably wouldn’t even use my degree. I’m very thankful to continue to prove people wrong about how I utilize it all the time, here in Rochester, NY. 🚢💕

WORTH IT. 📸😁

Grateful to have worked with @cin_minty as part of the Black Alt Undefined, a project I started last year (thanks to @visualstudiesworkshop) that pairs quotes and images of Black folks defining for themselves what Black Alt means to them providing validation for those of us who didn’t have a community of Black Alternative folks to grow up with and finally finding family—like we’re playing catch up with long lost friends who understand and accept us.

The goal of this project is to not place anyone in a box or paint the group with a broad brush by trying to define the term—it’s to show other Black folx who may or may not understand that they don’t have to be confined to an arbitrary idea of who Black folks "should" be.

Aiming to return to this project this year.

What an incredible evening! ❤️

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Caribbean Currents on July 23. Together, we raised $1,449 to support Farrin, shared an exclusive look at the film, and celebrated a $10,000 grant from the @racf4change to support both Farrin and our new Rochester Youth Filmmaking Initiative.

A heartfelt thank you to our partners @wxxirochester , @garthfagandancecompany , and the many community organizations that helped make this event possible.
