SUMMER RECAP:

We haven’t moved from BST to GMT yet so I think this is still appropriate 😏

Here are the summer highlights, before I resume regular programming (e.g., Wednesday Weekly Check-In’s). No surprises that all communications fall off a cliff the day school breaks for summer and return a solid month after schools back in session. Hi! 🙋🏼‍♀️ I’m back!

1. Twinning with Ben @rencontresarles
2. Shooting in Trafalgar Square with my 4x5. I was a spectacle for the tourists, with an audience of grandpa’s cracking jokes that the camera ‘should be in a museum’ and asking if I also preferred to ‘send telegrams’.
3. Printing in the lab - @318_art_lab - Rich and Elliot, with Maria just out of frame.
4. My boy Sailor in Cornwall this year.
5. I’m officially in the 0.1% of four-leaf clover finders. Here are a handful of the 69 (😏) I found in Maine during the summer. They are anticipated to become a stage costume.
6. Bo’s first American sleep away camp.
7. Blue’s third birthday, pool party! Here with her god-mum Cig.
8. I discovered, and became obsessed with, this third eye metal thing. I also learnt how to solve the Rubix cube - which has been a life long ambition - but the only video I made was from my early attempts and is six minutes long. I will save this evidence for a Wednesday when I have nothing else to say 😁.
9. Spent a week teaching at Maine Media Workshops with my brilliant friend and colleague Vivian.
10. Celebrated a pearl anniversary for Emily and Nadejda - so inspiring can’t wait to start planning anniversary parties with my best friends.
11. Annual visit to Ben’s cake face from his 40th birthday which Alice and I are saving for his 50th birthday.
12. Last day in Maine, Alissa found this incredible painting in Portland.
13. Ben’s Jarman documentary at VENICE!!!!! This is me in the polyester body-suit I wore for 14 hours in 40 degree heat 😂.
14. The gang dancing at Fiona’s 60th 🥳.
15. Bo and Blue’s first day at big kid school together 🥹.
16. The Heath at the end of summer.
17. Sailor, Blue, and Jessica in front of Freud’s couch.
18. Caspar’s 40th!
19. The family at Jarman’s London Film Festival Screening.

I made a fine-art newsprint titled “The Quarry” and self-published it in May of 2022. It took twelve months to finally produce this work in print, a true labor of love.

I worked with a writer called @vivian.ewing and made the 16 included images alongside her original short story, the subject matter being young adulthood in coastal Maine. Working with @vivian.ewing was motivating and inspiring, she is brilliant.

Books are and have always been my thing, which makes being included alongside the work at @photoeyebooks such a big deal for me.

This summer I read the @odetteengland monograph Dairy Character and was completely taken off guard by how much it resonated. I had heard of her through another photo friend (hi @notthatbush 🙋🏼‍♀️) and let’s just say I felt (and feel) an immediate deep respect for her. The day she reached out to let me know she would be reviewing this work was one of those hard days as a working artist where my edges felt like they were in crisis - I was immediately lifted.

Reading this review made the hairs stand up on my arms. I feel so grateful for the time taken to see this work and for my growing photography community. Thank you Odette.

I want to say, lastly, that this work was printed on Newsprint because it’s unfussy. My ideal was seeing this work on young adults walls and that has been realised (thank you @s.lytton).

I hope you take a chance on this piece!

“Every town has a place of legend and danger. Often it involves water. Think of all the books, songs or films you know where water is the backdrop for an atmospheric thriller. What makes The Quarry special is how Morlet and Ewing mine the aches and dreads of being a teenage girl and merge them with the exquisiteness of desire and freedom and the costs thereof. Their use of water as both character and characteristic. And the undercurrent of the pictures suggesting that what we can’t see can’t hurt us.” - Odette England
