Your name, Vivica, came from the actress in Set It Off. But long before you could ever know that, you had already set something off in me: fatherhood.

From the beginning, you were observant, intuitive, and tenderhearted. You were only about five when you caught a sadness on my face that I thought I had hidden from you. You looked up at me and said, “Daddy, why are you sad? Don’t be sad. Jesus loves you.”

I had to pick you up and put you on my shoulders so you wouldn’t see my tears.

That little girl was wise beyond her years.

I’ll never forget picking you up from school and hearing your friends shout, “Muyunda, your father is here!” I would stretch out my arms and watch you come running toward me, until you disappeared into my embrace, your gregarious laughter filling the air and causing your little body to shake with joy.

You’ve grown beyond that little girl now.

You’re a woman.

And when I look at you today, I see that the beautiful heart you had then is still there.
I see your strength.
Your intelligence.
Your independence.
Your compassion.
I see you finding your own place in the world, making your own bold choices, discovering what matters to you and becoming more fully yourself.

There are parts of you I recognize because you are my daughter. My face is in your face. Pieces of our family live in you, especially your grandma. But your heart is your own. Your mind is your own. Your dreams are your own. Your life is your own.

And one of the greatest privileges of being your father is getting to stand back and watching you become who you are.

I used to think being your father meant giving you the world. I understand now that the world was always yours to discover for yourself.

My job is to love you as you discover it.

To listen to you.
To learn from you.
To cheer for you.
To be there when you need me and to give you room when you need to fly.

Vivica, I am proud of you in ways that words cannot express. Not simply because you are my daughter, but because of the woman you are becoming.

Being your father is the honor of my lifetime.

Thank you for choosing me as your dad in this one.

Happy birthday (09/24) my love.

Dad.
