1️⃣ The work system is different than in Europe. German departments have different tasks than the American ones. 🌄

2️⃣ Trust the basics. Everywhere you shoot, your filmmaking groundwork still remains the same. 🤲🏽

3️⃣ Research the crews, check their portfolio. 🔎 Due to the strong competition in LA, there might be people overselling their skillset, which can cause problems later on during your production.
Of course this can happen everywhere in the world and the LA crews are great!

4️⃣ Work on your social media. 🚀 Generally american filmmakers excel / put more emphasis in their social media game, which gets them jobs, brand awareness and great connections. 👋🏽
Growing up in Germany we often get taught to be humble, to stay lowkey. 🙇🏻‍♂️ So it was harder for me show my work on social media or “sell” myself.
So what works in Germany might not work in the States. ✅

5️⃣ Find a local film production to work with. ❗️
They can help you with equipment insurances, permits, location insurances and so much more.
If it weren’t for @lookadmeusa @zoyaskya, we wouldn’t have gotten 90% of our equipment / locations. Thank you @zoyaskya 🥹

6️⃣ Do people need a permit in LA to shoot? Generally: yes. Imagine coming to the set and 10 minutes of shooting, an officer is telling you to bounce off. (Happened to us)
The risk of being sent away on the shooting day or the equipment being confiscated is being highly reduced - if you have a permit. 🚓 Plus you have one less thing to worry about. 😬

Still, there were occasions where we needed to shoot without permits.
In those instances:
a) try to look for private or indoor locations 🏠
b) always have some backup locations in mind 📝
c) keep the crew small and RUN! 🏃🏽👋🏽 hahaha
