Commit No Nuisance fades across the bricks of a narrow two-storey house at 72 Young Street, Fitzroy. It reads as quaint now. It wasn’t. It meant: don’t urinate here.

The lettering is low, bigger than it needs to be, and it faces the gap rather than the street. Whoever painted it was aiming at someone who had already stopped walking.

So why this wall?

72 Young Street sits one door from Gertrude Street. On the corner was the United Service Club Hotel, 122-126 Gertrude Street. Thirteen rooms. Built in 1874, closed in 1910 when the Licensing Reduction Board took its licence away.

Which means that from about 1890, when the house first shows up in the record, until 1910, there was a blank brick wall sitting in a quiet gap a few steps behind a working pub, in one of the most crowded parts of Fitzroy.

The Sands & McDougall directories give an unusually long run of women at the address. Mrs R. Lewis in 1890. Miss Alma Cohen in 1900. Mrs Elizabeth Glover in 1905. Mrs Louisa Cambry in 1910. Mrs Florence Thomas from at least 1915.

That’s the room-letting trade. Melbourne women let spare rooms for money they needed. Fitzroy, Carlton, North Melbourne and West Melbourne were where the cheap rooms were.

In February 1903 there was a furnished front room, suitable for two respectable men, going for 3s 6d each. In December 1907, a double room for eight shillings. Close to city, every convenience, respectable.

Then in March 1916 the Collingwood Court heard a maintenance case that Truth ran under the headline SOLDIER’S SINFUL SPOUSE. Eunice Zelley said she’d been living at 72 Young Street when her husband Benjamin shipped out with the First Expeditionary Force. The paper made a meal of her earlier life in sex work and her return to it. The bench threw the case out.

Benjamin said the woman of the house had to turn Eunice out when she came home in a state. He said he went back to Young Street later and took a room on his own.

It’s a private residence now. Gertrude Street has changed past recognition.

But on the side wall, above the wheelie bins, one instruction from a much more crowded neighbourhood is still there:

COMMIT NO NUISANCE.

John and Viki finally got to collaborate in Lightning Ridge - covering both sides of an agitator together. The cage also features birdlife from the area.
