Rooftop welcome party! Catching up with my Huntington Woods Elementary kids I’ve known since I was 7, drunk praying in Vietnamese with my giáo lý/Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể/ASU comrade, introducing Henry to my Laotian relatives who live in France, seeing cousins who came from the Netherlands, and hugging friends from the Writing Center/study abroad/pharmacy school/etc. was so amazing 🥹

Also peep the cuties learning the 🍏 dance for the wedding in the background of slide 10 😝

Lễ Đính Hôn, the traditional Vietnamese tea ceremony, is an important marriage custom marking the formal engagement of the couple, representing the official bond between the two families, and announcing the wedding plan. It is a chance for parents to showcase hospitality to family and loved ones. 🫖

During the ceremony, gift bearers carry mâm quả—gifts presented in round tin trays covered with red cloth—in odd-numbered sets. These traditionally include trầu cau (betel leaves and areca nuts), trà (tea), rượu (wine), heo quay (roast pig), hoa quả (fruits), xôi gấc (red sticky rice), and cốm xanh (green sticky rice flakes). 🧧

The áo dài is the iconic traditional Vietnamese garment, consisting of a long, split tunic worn over silk trousers. In Vietnamese, áo means “shirt” and dài means “long.” Traditional color choices are red and gold for the bride and blue for the groom. The áo dài is known for its beauty and flowing form. They are powerful symbols of Vietnamese identity, grace, and resilience. 🏮

Traditionally, an intimate tea ceremony takes place inside the living room where the couple serves tea to other elders. An altar honors ancestors and loved ones and may include candlesticks, incense, and flowers. 🍵

We honored our grandparents not with us today: Margaret & Arthur Klatt, Robert & Roberta (also known as “Bob & Boots”) Federhart, Lang Xuan Nguyễn, and Somdy & Thongphiew Wattanasintham. Inside of the mâm quả, Brian and Gretchen’s gracious offering is a family recipe: freshly baked Grandma Mauer’s oatmeal cookies with Michigan cherries. 🍒

My mâm quả mamis performed a Vietnamese fan dance, known as "Múa Quạt," which is characterized by movements mimicking the flow of wind or water. This traditional dance is a symbol of grace, beauty, and charm which is often performed in groups, creating a visual harmony that represents unity and community. 🪭

In Lao, “lam” means dance and “vong” means circle. This traditional folk dance is characterized by slow hand gestures in a circular formation and rhythmic footwork, sometimes with couples forming inner circles around the larger one. It is a significant part of weddings and festivals. The dance originated in rural Lao communities as a celebration of harvest time, performed around a central bale of rice, and it is now recognized by @UNESCO as a form of World Intangible Cultural Heritage. I’ll pretend we were as graceful as the description makes it out to be 😝

We can’t thank our amazing family and friends enough for all of the love, support, cooking, setup, tear down, sweet cards, laughing, decompressing, crying, traditional dancing, showing up in beautiful Lao sinh/pa bieng and áo dài, medical examination (shout out to the homie Dr. @bigj5768), and being part of our chaotic lives. We love you more than you know and can’t wait to celebrate more with you soon. Looking forward to #Klattrimony part II in Portugal! 🇵🇹

Chúc mừng năm mới / Happy Lunar New Year from our family to yours! Sống lâu trăm tuổi (we wish you longevity), an khang thịnh vượng (we wish you prosperity), & vạn sự như ý (may all your wishes come true).🧧🐍

*People are big mad at my cousin’s beautiful illustration in the @sephora comments, claiming it’s “cultural appropriation” and stereotyping Vietnamese people, saying we “eat snakes” and buy “whitening essence.” 🙃 To clarify, her illustration is not just representative of the Chinese New Year festival based on the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar, although Chinese New Year is an obviously culturally significant festival that has influenced others.

It was meant to illustrate friends of various cultures (Sephora asked her to draw dishes from South Korea, Singapore, China, Thailand, Malaysia, etc.) celebrating together with their different foods during Tết based on the Vietnamese lunisolar calendar. No one is saying Vietnamese is the “real” Lunar New Year. “Lunar” is just a modern colloquialism when it’s truly the lunisolar calendar used, and Chinese rule influenced Vietnamese culture! Tết has origins in the Lý dynasty (1009-1226 AD). We wish all a happy Chinese New Year/Spring Festival, Tết, Seollal, Lunar/Lunisolar New Year 😊
