$I first encountered Hedwig as one of those movies on IFC that was on late at night after my parents went to bed, and like a lot of baby queers, I was thrilled and mesmerized by this secret glimpse into another world. It was dangerous and subversive and unabashedly romantic at the same time, all these emotional colors that you recognize inside yourself (but maybe don't acknowledge) as a baby queer. Now as a grownass queer not watching it on TV late at night but live onstage, it feels so much more real, not a dream of how a person could live their life but happening right here and now. I think every queer person fundamentally understands this journey toward wholeness, from the fractured selves you create to survive in a rigid binary world toward the fully reconciled you that exists on your own terms beyond society's definitions of gender and sexuality. It's wild how radical a show like this still feels, and it totally makes sense that @city_theatre is doing this. It feels new, even though it's like 30 years old, and it's got a cast and crew making it feel right now and loud and here and very much not a secret. Go see it and rock out loud and proud!$
