Whew! Our 2nd ever cohort of teachers-in-training (3 coming from NYC, 1 coming from Ireland) converged in upstate NY and wow, what a week. This was an intensive, rigorous time for the teachers to gain more confidence with the touch and bodywork that awakens, opens, releases and frees the singing, speaking, voice-giving Human Being. Thank you to our incredible special guest teacher, the neuromuscular therapist, massage therapist, choir director and singer Peter Coulianos for sharing his understanding of the anatomical function of the jaw and tongue - and his ways of working on these areas in one’s own body. Our trainees continued developing functional hearing, practiced teaching each other - and someone completely new to the work. They, themselves, also received multiple sessions from Marisa because experiencing the work in one’s own body is essential for teaching it with authority. And thank you also to our other 1:1 master guest teacher, Deborah Carmichael of the @liberocantosinging . Finally, thank god for the gorgeous land, and the company of each other throughout. Thank you @jonathankoeofficial @maia.nu.nes Molly Ranson and Eliana Kissner♾️

For those wondering what a voice lesson with me looks like…voila! I have been steeped in the Vocal De-Armoring approach to voice for the last 15 years, and sometimes forget how just how uniquely embodying, supportive, and confidence building these lessons are compared to more traditional voice lessons early in my career. @vocal_dearmoring

In addition to my 20+ years in the business, I’ve originated 2 leading roles on Bway, many more Off-Bway (mostly in the Dave Malloy-verse), recorded my own albums, sung at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall (+ many more), and have been teaching one-on-one private lessons for the last 6 years in NYC/Catskills/Virtually.

If you’re interested in learning more about a curiosity-based relationship to your voice, sign up for a FREE 20 min Strategy Session so we can connect. Link ⬆️

A huge thanks to @rebeccajmichelson at @11oclockcreative for the photo & video and my beautiful volunteers, @kblanck @oliviaanjulee @snugmanchester !

Our work as professional singers working even at the highest professional levels or as busy leaders looking to learn how to speak with power but without hoarseness or physical pain, is to include more layers and a more expanded scope in our training and practices.
.
.
This means practices including but not limited to the physical and physiological. Speaking and singing also operate on emotional, neurological, “energetical” (a term related to voicework coined by Lisa Sokolov), mindful, and even spiritual levels. And, wow, thank god they do, because then the path towards excellence is so much richer and more fun!

So much voicework is mostly mechanistic and - sometimes implicitly, sometimes explicitly — treats the voice as something outside of us, something to fix, control, or change in a “final destination” kind of way. But when we orient to our voices that way, we orient to ourselves that way. Or maybe it’s the other way around — the way we orient to ourselves and to each other shapes how we orient to our voices….

This week, at the Resonance Rising summit, Jonathan Koe, both conservatory trained musicians, will explore how voicework can be a portal and path towards deeper expansion and Truer leadership. Ooh, you’ll also witness the very beginning of a somatic voice session with Jonathan on the hot seat. Our contribution to this summit is on August 21st. Free to join for 48 hours of free access the the conversation! Link in the bio.

I’m so honored to be a speaker for Resonance Rising, a free 7-day summit for visionary leaders, creatives, and soul-led seekers. I’ll be speaking on August 21st. Sign up at the bio link to join for free.

Hosted by @iam.marrissarhodes (a licensed psychoanalytic therapist, energy intuitive + mentor for soul-led leadership), this summit weaves together conversations on intuition, emotional depth, quantum coherence, symbolic intelligence, and building a legacy by resonance. I imagine you’ll find the perspectives presented there to be nourishing for your soul.

I’ll be joined by my colleague, friend, student and soon to be @vocal_dearmoring teacher in training @jonathankoeofficial. We come together to talk about the ways a somatic and holistic approach to working with singing and voice-giving can and does connect us more intimately with the many layered dimensions of Self, and bring us into closer contact with Life itself.

On a personal note -
In this moment I am posting. In this moment I am breathing. In this moment I have the privilege of Living (and may my life be a blessing). What does living mean? How to BE, how to orient towards myself as ENOUGH through Being - even when in some sense there’s absolutely nothing that could be ENOUGH given the pain pain pain and unfairness of life; the pain of helplessness and of State-sanctioned violence and war met by internally-sanctioned verbal internet wars. With all of this devastation, how, then, to live without orienting towards every moment as transactional? How, then to be in Life as a daily unfolding of source energy, rather than as a series of transactions to prove my existence means something….

This is what comes to mind as I sit down to share with you this post about an online summit I am part of. I’ll leave this in.

And I’m joyful to be part of this summit. May it be an offering.

Hello there! Announcing the next Vocal De-Armoring Community Weekend, June 6th - 8th at my home in what we sometimes call Upstate New York.

Limited to 8 people with 4 spots already claimed. If you’d like to come and haven’t ever worked with me or another VoDe teacher before, let’s connect about that.
Learn more and express interest via link in bio as usual or DM for more information.

Read on for a couple students’ experiences from the last weekend.

“My biggest epiphany from this weekend has been the power of following TRUE impulses. As an artist/woman/human being, I’ve become accustomed to doing things that on the surface are what I want, but in actuality are still far away from true desire/impulses/needs. Witnessing everyone tap into their TRUE needs was and is so inspiring. We all deserve that permission. I find myself unlearning the narrative that it is selfish to do so and in fact liberates others along with oneself.”

“…you just helped me understand what felt so moving to me about the weekend: the honor of witnessing AND being with others as they touched in with their true desires, sometimes expressing through their voices. what an ecstatic, grounding experience.”

“This past “lesson” (healing session, Im fondly calling it) was so profound in my journey, the addition of this experience to my body is fucking liquid gold I cant express with words the amount of life and realness moving in me at this time. I feel like praising after writing this. Maybe I’ll dance.”

From that wonderful day in Adam Guettel’s home recording studio. (As I write this I realize tonight is opening night for Floyd Collins on Broadway - one of Adam’s most incredible scores, a score that personally changed me as a composer and a person…) Oh, the joy I experienced on this recent recording weekend, in such a special space, getting to feel my former Self - the Self that composed this over a decade ago - and getting to be lovingly with that former Self’s musical language.

After Molly Ranson and @briansanderscello left, I recorded myself singing a few of the pieces for fun. Six times in a row each, each time straight through, no stopping to fix or perfect or fixate on micro moments, but instead trying to tune into and ride the deeper current. This particular take above wasn’t my favorite by any stretch, but it was the one my love of loves @mehlatonin___ happened to capture.

When the album comes out, you’ll get to hear Molly singing dynamically, gorgeously, creatively, uniquely. And I’ll sing a little as a kind of B side, plus there will be a few instrumental-only tracks of some of the songs. I still appreciate and feel connected to this solo-opera treasure written back in the day with librettist Mark Campbell. It’s had a sweet little production life overall and perhaps once the album comes out, there will be more to come!

I think it’s important to show the funky in- between goodness of process alongside all the polish. 💅🏼

Hence me working to internalize this melody without pressure or expectation, clapping out my rhythms, and THEN adding words…and THEN meaning! ☀️ Right now I’m working slowly, but surely, to expand my capacity beyond the types of music I’ve told myself I can and cannot sing. This is O, Che Felice Giorno by Caccini. I bow down to you in gorgeous progress.

Treating your song - any song - music itself ! - as the limitless, ever-changing, always- surprising phenomenon that it is!!! 💥💥💥 A song as a journey, as an exploration of the wild beauty and aliveness inherent to the song. The relationship to the music isn’t one of wrestling to conquer and control, but one of listening and learning and…riding! In that way, it’s also a mini practice for relating to life itself. When we practice, the bulk of our practice must be spent exploring and opening to new encounters. Then a tiny amount at the end can be on crafting and decision-making. In professional settings, too much of the time is spent walking up the same path again and again and not enough on exploring the multifaceted nature of the mountain! How to attune to the Mystery and spontaneity, while also committing to the rigor and form of a song? This is the depth and joy of the path🌙

From last weekend in Adam Guettel’s (holy, dreamy, so alive!) home studio, recording the 25 minute solo opera The Other Room. I composed this piece for piano, voice, cello and electronics about a decade ago with the librettist Mark Campbell. It premiered in NYC and then later on at a theatre in Florida and with an opera company in Minnesota, but we never managed to record it until now.
.
A treasure to have Molly Ranson, my friend, student, collaborator and soon to be VoDe teaching apprentice singing Lena. And my favorite cellist @briansanderscello who played cello in the original NYC production flew in from Nashville.

Playing this Richard Rodgers’ piano felt like a highlight of my life! Not to mention the special delight is signing into those top tier mics.

It will take us some time to keep playing around, mix, and get artwork together before you can hear it, but soon! 🌳
