With "Fado", a new EP on Lux Aeterna Records, Padre Guilherme and Diego Miranda bring the sound of Portugal into the world of melodic techno. Featuring fado singer Marta Alves and Portuguese guitarist Rui Poço, the release brings together the raw emotion of traditional Portuguese music and the drive of electronic production.

The EP includes two original tracks, each with its own story and perspective.

"Nada Te Perturbe" takes inspiration from a poem by Saint Teresa of Ávila, written nearly 500 years ago. Its message — that everything changes, but faith in God remains — feels particularly relevant in a world marked by conflict and uncertainty. Marta Alves’ voice and Rui Poço’s Portuguese guitar carry the emotional weight of the piece, while Padre Guilherme and Diego Miranda build an electronic arrangement around them.

"30 Moedas de Prata", written by Padre Guilherme, looks at the story of Judas and the thirty pieces of silver he received for betraying Jesus. The song turns this biblical episode into a reflection on a society often driven by money, fame and power, reminding listeners of what cannot be bought: love, friendship, family, dignity and peace.

The future in “Backwards” does not sound like a clean upgrade. It sounds heavy, haunted, and unsure of itself.

Slovakian DJ and producer Zuzana Retkesova, returns as Plasmatique’s and her upcoming release on Luft & Liebe takes a familiar fear and gives it a club shape: what happens when technology races forward while humanity slips behind? The question sits at the center of the track, rather than serving as surface-level science fiction styling. “Backwards” is framed as a dark, futuristic melodic techno journey, built around imposing bass, expansive melody, and cyberpunk-inflected male vocals.

That combination gives the release two kinds of pressure. One comes from the dance floor, where bass and scale matter. The other comes from the story implied by the sound, as if a civilization has paused long enough to ask whether progress still means progress.

“Backwards” is scheduled for release on October 16, 2026, via Luft & Liebe. The package includes the original track and an extended mix, giving DJs a longer version built for more patient deployment in a set. #beatport #beatportexclusive #beatportcharts #techno #melodichouseandtechno

Few artists are as closely tied to the history of European club culture as Laurent Garnier.

Over nearly four decades, the French DJ and producer has moved through techno, house, radio, festivals and underground spaces without ever becoming entirely defined by one of them. His career has developed alongside electronic music itself, from the first wave of acid house and rave culture to the global festival circuit that followed.

That story is now at the centre of "Garnier", a new book by French author and essayist Mathilde Ramadier. Built around extensive conversations with Garnier, the book follows his path from an early fascination with music to Manchester, where his time around the Haçienda became one of the defining chapters in his development as a DJ.

With years of experience on stage and in the studio, Nottingham-based producer and DJ Craig Massie is opening a new chapter with Senior Massie. Originally launched in late 2025 as a duo with close friend Rik Senior, the project has since become Craig’s solo creative outlet, retaining its name as a tribute to the friendship that started it all.

A touring musician and professional live guitarist since his teenage years, Massie brings a rich musical background to his growing passion for electronic music. His debut track, “Esta Loca,” earned an early spotlight on BBC Radio 1 Dance with Jaguar, while mastering engineer Janne Hatula, better known as FANU, has come on board to help shape the sound of his releases.

Some progressive house records are built for pressure. “Freedom” feels built for release. Jay Cluss brings an open, uplifting mood to Chrom Recordings with a single that moves with purpose, but still leaves space for air, glow, and emotion.

That balance matters. A track can be melodic without becoming soft. It can feel dreamy without losing the floor. “Freedom” sits in that useful middle ground, where the groove keeps moving and the atmosphere gives the room something to breathe with.

Its connection to Chrom Recordings’ ADE 2026 compilation also gives the release a wider frame. This is not just a single floating on its own. It feels tied to a label moment, a larger snapshot of melodic and progressive sounds gathered around Amsterdam Dance Event energy.

For selectors, producers, and listeners who care about flow, that context makes the record more interesting. The release includes the main version and a radio edit, which gives it two practical lives. One belongs in the mix. The other works as a more direct listen #beatportexclusive #beatport #melodichouseandtechno #progressivehouse

Originally from A Coruña, Spain, Julio Vellaré brings together the electropop sound of the late 2000s and a deeply personal approach to songwriting. Lady Gaga’s work from that period is a central influence, particularly its combination of electronic production, strong melodies, and a distinctive visual identity. Drawing on these foundations, Vellaré revisits the era through his own experiences, emotions, and memories.

The project took shape in collaboration with an Italian producer whom he discovered through Instagram and chose for their shared affinity for 2000s electropop. Recording in his hometown added an intimate dimension to the process, reconnecting him with the places where the experiences that now inform his music first unfolded.

Between industrial architecture, underground culture and an increasingly international electronic scene, REF Festival is turning Nice into a meeting point between the Mediterranean and contemporary club culture. Its seventh edition, held from May 8 to 10, 2026, confirmed the ambition of a project that goes far beyond the traditional music festival format. Just a few kilometres away from the polished image of the Promenade des Anglais, REF reveals another side of Nice: rawer, more creative and distinctly nocturnal, where the city’s cultural identity feels constantly in motion.

At the heart of the festival is Le 109, a contemporary cultural hub located in the city’s former slaughterhouses on Route de Turin. Its industrial architecture, large-scale spaces and open areas create a striking contrast with the elegance usually associated with the French Riviera. It is precisely this tension that gives REF much of its identity, placing electronic music inside an environment that feels both unexpected and completely natural. The venue itself becomes part of the experience, shaping the atmosphere as much as the sound.

Five issues in, Melodic Dancers continues to grow as a space for discovery, conversation and movement. Our fifth print edition brings together the artists, ideas and places shaping an electronic music scene that never stands still.

On the front cover, Pôngo share their distinctive vision as Italian DJs and producers. On the back cover, Mariann Krott represents the people working behind the scenes, building connections and creating opportunities across the industry. Both perspectives are part of the story we wanted to tell in this issue.

Inside, we revisit our conversations with Teho, Yazan Sarayrah and DJ Wallace, and hear from Pôngo, Mariann Krott, HEDEGAARD, Art Attack, SO’LO (FR) and 88Dubs. Their stories offer different perspectives on creativity, identity, production and club culture.

We also explore a new book on Laurent Garnier, releases from Charlotte de Witte and Donato Dozzy, and the unexpected collaboration between Miss Monique and Robbie Williams. Exclusive charts from Giorgia Angiuli, ASAL, Krismi, Wurtz, Amour Propre, Phunkadelica and STISEMA open a window onto the tracks shaping their sets and listening habits.

Our reviews travel from atmospheric sounds to tougher club releases, while the tech section explores the Denon DJ Prime 4 G2. We also head to Nice for REF Session and REF Festival, then to Barcelona for MWE Records’ second anniversary at Macarena Club.

This edition follows the culture wherever it moves. It’s a collection of voices, sounds and moments that remind us why there is always something new to discover. Turn the page and meet the people keeping it alive
