I rarely smile all the way through a play but I didn’t stop during The Merry Wives of Windsor. It is just that funny.

It’s not one of William Shakespeare’s comedies that I was eager to see again, having experienced it several times which brought me dangerously close to reaching my lifetime limit. However, when a dear friend said she’d read but never seen it, I acquiesced, & not only because the cast features some of my favorite Chicago actors. It turned out to be exactly the light, fizzy tonic we needed.

It helps that it's now easy to give The Merry Wives of Windsor a Feminist read thanks to Maggie O’Farrell’s brilliant novel Hamnet, lyrically reimagined last Winter by the Royal Shakespeare Company on Chicago Shakespeare’s stage & there’s the award-winning movie. How excellent that new art and scholarship acknowledge the Bard’s gift for creating smart, strong and loving women, perhaps inspired by those he knew and loved. Here the heroines are up to much mischief, and their hijinks include outwitting an amorous suitor who happens to be a notorious cad.

Credit is due to the fine directing & the extraordinary cast that animates this production. To say this corps of talent is star-studded is to reach for the understatement of mud rather than the Milky Way. Praise for all but especially the Windsor Wives Start with Ora Jones as Mistress Page. Oh Ora Jones, a woman who is ideal is any role. Here she serves up a stiff cocktail of common-sense wife, loving mother not easily duped by her progeny and devoted friend. That dear friend, Mistress Ford, is played by Issy van Randwyck as deliciously mischievous and sexy, one of the few women over 30 who looks impossibly excellent in her skintight leggings – especially the leopard ones.

Put aside your troubles & take in The Merry Wives of Windsor. It turns out it is the elixir you need in these challenging times.

22 actors and each of them delivers a standout performance. 🌟

These reviews only scratch the surface of what this all-star cast can do.

THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR is now playing through May 3!

@chicagoshakes ‘ Opening Night of “The Merry Wives Of Windsor” was absolutely incredible! As a pseudo-Shakespeare buff who read a lot of the comedies in college, this was one of the plays I had not read. Having very little familiarity with this piece was actually cool - I loved going in blind to this lesser-known farce of The Bard’s. It was so much fun getting to see this imagination of the feminism- packed romp where we get to see the women turn the tables on the stock character staple of Shakespeare’s comedies Falstaff (Sir John Falstaff) and best his trickery with some of their own 😂 It was a pure delight, so beautifully designed and performed - thank you so much, #ChicagoShakespeare, for having me out and letting me experience another top-notch production with you all.

“Merry Wives” is playing now through May 3rd in The Jentes Family Courtyard Theater at Chicago Shakes - however, go see it as soon as possible because, as Ford puts it in the show, “Better three hours too soon than a minute too late!”

May And remember, as always … for all things theatre, turn to #PaigeEight! 🎭💖📝8️⃣💖🎭

Paige Eight P.S. Did I #BroadwayBound in all fuschia (inspired by the playbill and production’s promo photos) and leopard in a nod to the animal print Mistress Ford dons throughout the entire show? Forsooth, my gentle people, forsooth. I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t! Stay tuned for more Opening Night and theatre-inspired dress-up (and let me know in the comments below ⬇️ if you have any Broadway Bound looks or ideas you’d like to see me try) … 😉
