Hope everyone is well and enjoying this freezing cold spell!

We’ve got fresh records on the shelves, a bar full of wine, and a super exciting weekend packed with events in store for you!

FRI 21st

Algorhythm

Algorhythm, Sheffield’s newest underground techno party, comes to Grub to celebrate a year of parties in the Steel City. Joining them for this special one is INLIMEN who supported Blawan back in March and Ol.G from the second party with JKS, who will play alongside resident Harrison. Expect a full exploration of techno with these three.

SAT 22nd

Muzyka Kiszona launch party

Local party starter TB-316 will launch her new record label, Muzyka Kiszona, this Saturday! We’ll be treated to DJ sets from her, Ol.G, and special guests Korra and Noni-Mouse, alongside a guest-curated wine list. The launch will feature the label’s first release, TB-316’s debut EP ‘Club Tooling’ - a contortion of field-recorded industrial samples into cold, hectic tracks for the dancefloor. TB-316 is the founder of dyke night Silicone Carbide, and she’s played nights such as Leatherdyke and Communion as well as doing a guest mix on Voices radio. She’s a devotee of the heavy, off-kilter corners of the underground with a healthy dose of sleaze and bounce.

SUN 23rd

Grub Records X BBC Radio 6 Music (2-5pm)

BBC Radio 6 Music are broadcasting their new music fix from Grub this Sunday, featuring some of Sheffield’s finest including Off Me Nut Records, Unity Underground, and Control.

The shop and bar will be open for the duration of the broadcast, so feel free to come hang and if you scream loud enough, you may also find yourself some airtime on the radio!

Set times:
2pm - Control.
3pm - Unity Underground
4pm - Off Me Nut

Kegstand (7-11pm)

Sunday slo-mo goodness from the Kegstand team!

Get out of the cold and come for a dance!

Love from Team Grub x

🌀Premiere: Volen - Pure Energy🌀

Southwestern mastermind @volen__ returns to Seattle’s @rhizomelabel with five fresh cuts from his Arizona beat lab on the Validation EP. Queued up for a first listen we have “Pure Energy”, the Bandcamp Digital Exclusive accompanying the vinyl release.

Since his release Rolling with Papers on Mexico’s UFO Series, we’ve been tracking Volen closely here on the other side of the Portal. His productions combine infectious grooves, with an ear-candy-shop of samples, achieving a retro-futuristic sound that’s beyond timeless.

“Pure Energy” is no exception. Beginning with a classic West Coast break, the track is at times both dreamy and funky, with airy pads, acidic stabs, and a collage of samples that glues it all together.

After years of listening to his tracks, it’s a pleasure to share a few words from Volen on his new release over on the Peace Portal website. Full release available on the Rhizome Bandcamp.

Hellou friend!!

Uknow who u are!!

Vayan a Bandcamp!!

Premiere 'Volen - Left & Right' track from Validation EP released in vinyl, 12" at Rhizome. Swipe left to receive additional details about the track and a short preview of the audio. Full track can be streamed on my YouTube and SoundCloud pages.

We met Volen through a tip from our friends at Cyclone as a Los Angeles-based DJ who was also a natural with production. In 2021 we released Volen's Distortion mini-album on Rhizome Forms. Those heady productions stuck with us and we knew a vinyl would soon be ready. Four years later, with countless hours spent in his Arizona desert sound lab, we present four acidic dancefloor interventions on wax.

“Validation” is immediately lively with a cascading acid groove. Spinning through inversions, the vocal refrains frame the kaleidoscopic dance floor energy of the title track.

The record's a-side finds completeness with the twisted anthem “I've Got to Shower".
Wobbly chords simmer under that famous sample while a slick breakbeat delivers the rhythm.

Side-b arrives with swagger as "Left & Right” rolls in with a mental acid and breakbeat powerplant of a groove. The track's breakdown billows atmosphere while the lower frequencies growl.

Volen saves the starry ecstasy for the final track. “Pump Their Dump” is an upbeat and dreamy acid house journey evolving into a collage of ear candy samples that'll satisfy dancers looking for that positive vibration release.
