When City Manager Valmarie Turner presented her budget recommendations for FY (fiscal year) 2025-26, “challenges and choices” was the repeated theme.

Now at the start of the 2026-27 school year, our teachers and students have been forced into their own challenges and choices. Layoffs, cut or reduced programs, and loss of our activity buses.

Our city can’t afford to adequately fund our schools but extravagant office remodels are no problem?

We deserve a City Council that takes accountability and holds their employees accountable as well.

We. Deserve. Better.

Meet @moore4roanoke ✨ RCC-PTA met him almost a year ago when he introduced himself after a council meeting. He was there to learn more about the school funding situation. We have loved seeing these new candidates take such an interest in our schools.

PTA as a rule is apolitical but not non-political. Why? Because politics affects us all, especially at the local level. We want to help make you aware of WHO these candidates are and HOW they have shown up for our schools.
Let’s not forget that in the past year @roanokeschools has lost staff, 3rd Grade PLATO, and activity buses for fall/winter after school activities. We will see the damage done from our City Council’s funding cuts this year. A city council that @vivianforroanoke sat on.
We would also like to point out that out of all of our City Council, she is the only one who never met with the PTA. That speaks volumes to us.
Voting for the primary election is Aug 4th. She is running as a Democrat.

It’s always something with @city_of_roanoke .
Correct us if we’re wrong but we could find no other locality that funded their schools quarterly and the rest of the city annually. It almost seems retaliatory to @roanokeschools for reasons we don’t understand because the RCPS audits have literally been winning awards. The city’s audits, quite the opposite. Maybe that’s the issue. It’s maddening when things like this negatively impact our children and their educators.
There are 2 council members running for reelection. We need change.
Research the candidates and VOTE.

Recently @vivianforroanoke and @votevolosin joined in a protest on the steps of the municipal building for collective bargaining for public employees (teachers, firefighters, city employees, etc.).
The interesting thing about them being there is that state law permits them to individually adopt ordinances to authorize it. Because Gov. Abigail Spanberger vetoed statewide expansion bills (HB 1263/SB 378), the decision to unionize and collectively bargain remains entirely at the discretion of local governing bodies.
What they were protesting, they actually have the power to change.
It makes sense them being there when you realize they are both running for reelection right after voting to cut funding again to our public schools. The 3rd funding cut in the past 2 years.
Tomorrow the @roanokeschools School Board will vote on a budget that cuts the following:
🔸activity busses for Fall/Winter sports
🔸reduces the number of 3yr preschool programs from 9 to just 3
🔸PLATO for 3rd Grade
🔸170 positions city wide in the schools by and central office, of which 65 positions were filled and layoffs had to be carried out.
That is only some of the cuts. Our children and their teachers will feel these cuts deeply. Remember this when you go to vote in the Democratic Primary Election. Early voting starts June 18th with Election Day being Aug 4th.
You cannot vote in both Democratic and Republican primaries so we encourage you to participate in the one with the most candidates, the Democratic Primary.
Whatever you do, remember what has been taken from our schools, pay attention to who is showing up for us in REAL ways, and VOTE.

There are SO many 💎 we gained from our time in Atlanta (& don’t worry we’ll be back one day)

The one memory that we still talk about in 2026! is how @smarttrouble & the people SHUT DOWN a gas station because of how they treated us… that powerful moment fuels this mission even today— just imagine if we showed up like that everywhere in this society… but to be short & stick to the point lol

Do I want people to boycott #HamlarCurtis?! One of my favorite uncles is a staple there so ideally, I’d rather go with something that won’t affect him HOWEVER if it gets to that point & the owner doesn’t care about his own team, then I’d definitely say it’s time to #MakeACHAiNGE…

Meaning #CollectiveAction for ALL— @hopecenterofnw, his people, our people, NW, Roanoke in general! But in the meantime & between time if anyone has a #legalaid resource we’d greatly appreciate it! Y’know it’s already hard enough to be in the #nonprofit sector especially as Black women… imagine the struggle we had trying to show up 💯 last Saturday for the people with this on our shoulders!

These are unnecessary issues we don’t have the time, talent nor treasure to waste on! 💛🔗🤞🏾

No one, absolutely NO ONE wanted these cuts to happen. We have been raising awareness for years now about these continuing cuts. We know that options for the school board on what can be cut in a funding deficit are limited because of VDOE requirements. That means special programs like PLATO, Preschool, activity buses and the arts get hit the hardest. It doesn’t mean they are any less essential or the loss felt less. This is gutting to everyone at @roanokeschools and the families that relied upon these programs.
It’s very important to not spread misinformation or misplace blame. The $16.5m deficit was a result of continuing cuts in funding from @city_of_roanoke .
Now is the time to focus on the primary election for the 3 city council seats that are up and get people in there who truly have our children’s education and well being in mind.
No excuses anymore. We demand change.
Early voting: 6/18 - 8/1
Election Day: 8/4

Please reach out if you have any questions about these cuts. If we don’t know the answer, we will find out.

@roanokeschools is constrained on what they can and can’t cut by the VDOE. They have to meet certain requirements and standards so when it comes to large and unexpected funding cuts, like the 3 cuts in the past 2 years, options are very limited.
This is why you’re seeing PLATO, activity buses and the arts in RCPS take such big hits, or possible elimination. They even had to lay off 65 RCPS employees. The City, instead of taking responsibility for this situation, tries to pass the blame off to the School Board. @epowerscitytreasurer approached us after the vote yesterday and kept insisting that that was who we should talk too. We are in constant communication with them and very well informed, so this felt insulting.
Let’s not forget that the RCPS CFO Kathleen Jackson, was just named Virginia’s School CFO of the year.

Thank you for the excellent reporting @wfxrtv .
