Over the last couple of months, we’ve learned what it looks like to live for the Kingdom of God rather than ourselves. In Matthew 7, Jesus shows us how that transforms the way we interact with others.

He addresses the topic of judgment. What does it mean to judge, and how should we do it? Jesus isn’t calling us to avoid discerning right from wrong. Instead, He warns against a prideful attitude that looks down on others while ignoring our own need for grace. When we rightly see ourselves as sinners justified by faith, we’re able to humbly and lovingly evaluate the actions of others.

The way we view ourselves in light of the gospel shapes the way we treat everyone around us. As we remember the mercy and grace Christ has shown us, we’re freed to extend that same mercy, grace, and love to others.

If someone looked at your life, what would they see? Would they see someone who values God above all else? Would they see greed or generosity? Would they know who you serve?

In Matthew 6, Jesus calls His followers to examine their hearts through three illustrations: treasure, eyes, and a master. Our treasure reveals what we value most. Our eyes reveal what shapes our perspective. Our master reveals who we ultimately serve. Jesus calls us to live with undivided hearts that treasure Him above all else.

Where is your treasure? What is shaping your perspective? And who are you serving?

“But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.“
