Indigenous Peoples’ Day | October 12

Join Native at Virginia Tech today as we celebrate and reflect on Indigenous Peoples’ Day. We honor the ancestors who have stewarded these lands since time immemorial and recognize our responsibility to protect, care for, and sustain the lands and waters of Indigenous Peoples.

Today is an opportunity to raise awareness, learn from Indigenous communities, and engage with the ongoing issues, movements, and advocacy efforts across NDN Country. From Indigenous sovereignty and land back to food sovereignty, environmental justice, and cultural revitalization, there are countless ways to show up in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples.

Advocacy does not start and end on this day. It is an ongoing commitment to learning, listening, building relationships, and taking action in support of Indigenous self-determination and the futures of our communities.

This past week, Gator AISES was proud to have our president, Yona (@yona_ovdiyenko), and alumni, Mictla (@chad_the_chief) and Julie (@juallee), participate in the Virginia Tech NextGen Hawaiʻi Study Away Program!

Through this incredible experience, they had the opportunity to learn alongside Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) land stewards and knowledge keepers, engaging with ʻāina (land), and community.

Throughout the program, they explored Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) through hands-on experiences with culturally significant food crops including kalo (taro), ʻulu (breadfruit), and much more. They also learned about the connections between Indigenous agriculture, land stewardship, food sovereignty, and cultural continuity.

From working with community-led organizations to visiting culturally significant places and connecting with scholars at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, this experience offered an opportunity to learn from the land, from community, and from Indigenous knowledge keepers.

We are so proud of Yona, Mictla, and Julie for representing the Gator AISES community and bringing these experiences and perspectives back with them!

Mahalo nui loa to Virginia Tech who made this experience possible!

This past weekend, some of our Gator AISES members traveled to Virginia Tech to attend our sister organizations’ — @hokieaises and @vt_natives — 9th Annual Powwow

While visiting, members also had the opportunity to tour the @vt_icg and learn about how traditional Indigenous knowledge is integrated into their gardening practices and community care

We’re so grateful for the opportunity to connect with community, and support our friends across campuses.

Thank you to @hokieaises and @vt_natives for your hospitality and for hosting such an amazing weekend.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Palestinian Land Day! For decades, Palestinians have resisted violent land seizures and colonization—a history that mirrors the struggles of Indigenous peoples on Turtle Island, who have faced parallel systems of colonial violence from settlers.

Date 🗓️: Tuesday, March 31st, 2026
Time ⏰: 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Location📍: Turfgrass Research Center – 615 Southgate Drive, Blacksburg, VA

Join us this Tuesday, in collaboration with Native@VT, for a collective commemoration at the Indigenous Community Garden at Virginia Tech. Together, we will plant take-home poppy seed sprouts in honor of the Palestinian martyrs and share solidarity across lands.

The evening will feature:
Outdoor games, music, and dance
Speakers and poetry to reconnect with community
Food and refreshments
Poppy and Sunflowers Planting
This event is free and open to all.

Our connection to the land grounds us across generations—past, present, and future. Let’s use this time to celebrate Indigenous knowledge, community, and joy, while remembering the ongoing fight for a free Palestine, Land Back, and a liberated world.
