Try something new this fall! Be like Julie Andrews and climb every mountain!! 🦋

I never thought I’d be saying this, but I SLAYED my first fire tower!!!! This is a huge deal for me because heights are super scary. Every time I’ve tried to climb a fire tower, I’ve frozen and nearly puked after the first flight. But I’m SO glad I finally went for it!!!

🍂 Vermont has several fire towers have been guarding our hills for more than a hundred years. Deforestation in the late 1800s led to a lot of dry wood in our forests. In the early 1900s, wildfires burned more than 15,000 acres across the state.

💚 In 1904, Vermont created a fire safety program and hired a fire warden, who advocated for a network of fire towers. Local landowners financed their construction to protect their neighborhoods. The state built 38 fire towers across the Green Mountains and paid lookouts $2/day to watch.

Today, 14 towers have survived and are popular hiking destinations. They offer many of the best views in Vermont and are surrounded by beautiful trails. Now that I’ve conquered one, I’m on a mission to climb them all!
