What an awesome opportunity to meet so many like minded individuals.

The PNW Fire Conference brought together firefighters from across our nation, from New Hampshire, Canada, Alaska, Texas, California and more!

So many different people, from so many different backgrounds and skill levels.

What I noticed that everyone had in common..brotherhood…sisterhood…firemanship.

The willingness to learn…try…fail and support one another..remaining humble and open minded.

It was awesome to see…these gentlemen are seasoned professionals…yet they know that there is always more to learn…even a newly promoted 20 plus year Captain who is not too proud to admit that he needs to learn new skills to be successful in his new position.

Thank you Brothers for taking the time to speak with me…never stop learning and keep setting the bar 😉👍

9 + 0 = 9
8 + 1 = 9
7 + 2 = 9
6 + 3 = 9
3 × 3 = 9
18 ÷ 2 = 9
12 − 3 = 9
27 ÷ 3 = 9

Eight different ways. One correct answer.

Now apply that same concept to leadership.

One of the biggest mistakes a leader can make is believing that their way is the only right way. Just because you’ve done something a certain way for 20 years doesn’t mean someone else can’t accomplish the same objective using a different approach.

Experience is valuable. Tradition has its place. Standards are necessary. But none of those should prevent us from listening, learning, and recognizing that there may be another way to get the job done.

𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦. 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐭.

If someone can accomplish the same objective safely, effectively, and within established standards, why should it matter if their approach looks different from yours?

As leaders, we should be developing independent thinkers, not creating carbon copies of ourselves. We should encourage questions, welcome ideas, and give people the opportunity to solve problems without constantly looking over their shoulders.

That doesn’t mean lowering expectations or compromising safety. It means understanding the difference between maintaining a standard and controlling every step of the process.

𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 “𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭” 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 “𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭.”

Sometimes the best thing a leader can do is step aside, watch someone else work, and realize there’s something new to learn.

Different methods. Same positive outcome.

That’s not a failure of leadership. That’s what good leadership should produce.

On Wednesday, October 14th, the Scarborough Engine Company drilled on roof operations using the department’s newly acquired @vulka.fire fire modular roof prop. Members performed vertical ventilation on a peaked roof with both saws and axes, practicing operating off a roof ladder, all under smokey conditions.

At Tri-State Fire Training, we believe taking care of our own goes well beyond the fireground. This fall, we’re proud to release our Men’s Health apparel collection to help raise awareness and support for two issues that hit especially close to home in the fire service: occupational cancer and mental health. These are battles far too many of our brothers face, and we believe it’s our responsibility to stand together, raise awareness, and support those who need it.

Our limited-edition design is available on T-shirts and sweatshirts in both youth and adult sizes. A portion of the proceeds from every purchase will be donated to a men’s health initiative supporting occupational cancer and mental health.

The online store will remain open until October 29th!

To order, visit the link in our bio, find the link on our website, or simply DM us and we’ll send it directly to you.
