Just received my contributor copy of Phil Day and WH Chong's amazing high concept poetry broadsheet, featuring me, Lisa Collyer, Beau Biddle, shady Cosgrove, SK Kelen, Cassandra Atherton, Ender Baskan, Stuart Barnes, PiO, Maria Takolander, Nicholas Jose, Michael Aitken, Konrad Winkler, Amelia Walker, Tric O'Heare, and Chris Andrews. A star studded line up of hand written poems, which is odd for me because I rarely go near a pen.

Named for the entirely real poet invented by two fictional poets, Ern Malley.

Been very light on short form submissions this year, but when something this much fun comes along, you answer the call. Chong and Day continue to delight with their efforts in the literary space.

GALLERY VISITS

Another memorable gallery visit was to McClelland for the Rick Amor Drawing Award in 2024.

Among the works on display, W.H. Chong’s, Two Painters (2023) immediately captured my attention. Created in pastel and pencil on paper, the drawing features two overlapping figures viewed from different orientations, with handwritten text running through the image like a collaged layer.

The longer I looked, the more intriguing it became. The shifting figures create a sense of movement and psychological tension, while the text adds another layer that feels both personal and elusive.

I clearly wasn’t alone in my response. More than 5,000 people visited the exhibition, and Two Painters was voted the winner of the People’s Choice Award.

It is always interesting to discover which artwork stays with you—and then learn that it also resonated so strongly with others.

I tried out a small bow pen in the regular Sunday sketching session this morning. It makes the best marks! Many thanks for Noel for taking charge for @w.h.chong while he was away dealing with a tree situation 🫪
