What does it mean to live with change, not against it?

In Zhujiajiao Water Town, Shanghai festival students stepped into a place shaped by water for over 1,700 years. Walking across stone bridges, tracing narrow canals, and experiencing a community built in response to the elements.

They explored the legend of Gonggong, Zhurong, and Nüwa, where chaos and repair sit side by side. A story of destruction, resilience, and rebuilding that echoed through the town itself.

Back in the ensemble, these ideas took form through physical storytelling and shared creation. Students worked with the symbols of bridges and water, connection and transformation, testing how communities hold together while everything around them shifts.

They didn’t just explore change as an idea. They experienced how people adapt, rebuild, and find balance over time.

Hosted by Western International School of Shanghai, with students from Canadian Academy Kobe, Canadian International School of Hong Kong, Discovery Bay International School, ISA Science City International School of Guangzhou, Western Academy Beijing, and Western International School of Shanghai.

Supported by ISTA artists Shane Anthony Jones, Catherine Rankin, Kimberly Xie-Smith, and Cheryl Causley.

The Western Academy of Beijing wrote its constitution in 1994. Three decades later, every policy the school sets still has to trace back to it.

The evidence is everywhere. A strategic vision designed by students, with no end date. An admissions process built around telling families what the school will not do. A 17-person leadership team that meets every two weeks, partly to make decisions, mostly to keep the shared language alive.

WAB has 1,400 students from 58 nationalities, speaking 44 languages, on one campus in Beijing. "Keeping a community that large moving in one direction isn't a strategic exercise, it's a cultural one," Head of School Marta Medved Krajnovic said.

Delighted to represent Barkerville at the Chinese Canadian Historical Society of British Columbia (CCHSBC)’s annual dinner tonight. It was a privilege to contribute to the prize pool and join fellow community leaders in celebrating this year’s honoree, Mrs. Wendy Au.

My professional history with Wendy dates back to the Beijing 2008 Summer Games, when she was Vancouver's Assistant City Manager and I was Team Attaché with the Canadian Paralympic Committee. At the time, we collaborated to bring Mayor Sam Sullivan to Western Academy of Beijing (WAB), fostering an international dialogue on the Olympic and Paralympic experience at the start of the school year.

Seeing the community offer multiple standing ovations for Wendy this evening was a testament to her inclusive leadership and tireless work ethic. A well-deserved congratulations to a pillar of our community.

Double Double Happiness – Exhibition View
WAB Art Collective, 2016

Prior to its transformation into the Double Double Happiness tricycle (三轮车), the work was first realised as a suspended installation.

Individually constructed and painted forms reinterpreting the traditional Chinese symbol 囍 were hung within the space, creating a floating field of repetition and colour. The character shifted from decorative motif to architectural presence, occupying the room through scale and accumulation.

The later reconfiguration into a mobile sculpture extended this spatial gesture beyond the gallery, transforming installation into movement. #wablive #collaborativeart #collectiveart #doublehappiness

Double Double Happiness – 囍囍
WAB Art Collective, 2016

A collaborative installation artwork developed in two stages.

Individually constructed and painted forms reinterpreting the traditional Chinese “double happiness” characters 囍 were first suspended as a space-based installation - transforming a familiar symbol of celebration and union into a floating field of colour and repetition.

The work was later reconfigured into the Double Double Happiness tricycle (三轮车 – sān lún chē), shifting from interior installation to mobile sculpture. Through accumulation, repetition, and collective making, a cultural sign became spatial, structural, and shared. #DoubleHappiness

The WAB, HUMAN, and LIFETREE collaboration was an incredibly impactful and inspiring two-day training and workshop experience 🔥
WAB’s vision, mission, and student values are deeply embedded in its environment, and its approach to developing future-ready skills through the arts felt like a true reflection of Human International School.
The IB framework, PBL projects, and the 40:40:20 approach clearly demonstrate how student growth can be meaningfully observed and assessed in a modern educational context.
Heartfelt thanks to the WAB educators for creating such a valuable, inspiring, and forward-thinking learning experience 🙏

International school websites carry a big responsibility: welcoming families from different countries, clearly explaining complex boarding programs, and showing how global perspectives shape daily life. 🌎

This year, a wide range of UK and international schools launched new sites with Finalsite. Each has its own vision, but they share a few key strengths:

➤ Effective design
➤ Intuitive navigation
➤ Engaging user experience
➤ High-quality visuals and content

Swipe to explore some of the standout international school websites of 2025, and gather inspiration for your next redesign!

✨ Big news! Leonardo Donovan’s official showreel has just dropped — showcasing his powerful performances across film and video. From the gripping short Get Out (2025), to the haunting The Truth Within (2024), and the enigmatic What’s Missing? (2025), Leonardo brings depth, intensity, and undeniable presence to every role. 🎬🔥

This reel is more than a highlight — it’s a testament to his versatility as an actor, director, and storyteller. Whether he’s embodying Chris Washington in Get Out, the mysterious Salesman in The Truth Within, or Stephan Johnson in What’s Missing?, Leonardo proves he’s a voice to watch in independent cinema.

What’s Missing?
He wakes early, before his alarm goes off, makes his bed with military precision, and never drops a beat. Stephan Johnson is a high functioning sociopath; meticulously crafting each step just to fit in. However, when someone is paying a bit more attention to detail, the holes in his performance become more and more difficult to cover.

Film crew: Darya G, Anna S, Peter P, Tank H, Leonardo D, Adi S, Dexter K.
