Launched in 2021 by Dr. Monica White Ndounou, this day commemorates the opening night of the African Grove Theatre on Sept 17th, 1821. Founded by William Brown in New York City, it is recognized as the first known Black Professional theatre in the country.

So today, join us in the celebration by ATTENDING A SHOW at a Black Theatre, DONATING to a Black Theatre, physically providing RESOURCES and ASSISTANCE to a Black Theatre, and POSTING PICTURES of your favorite Black Theatre on social media!

From Los Angeles to Baton Rouge ✨

Revisiting one of the wig sculptures created for WACO Theater Center’s Still Here as the work continues its journey on tour.

This piece was created alongside Hair & Wig Designer Nikiya Mathis, with me serving as Associate Hair & Wig Designer and sculpting the work by hand.
Returning to it in Baton Rouge meant coming back to a piece we created together. I repaired and reinforced its structure, reshaped elements, and introduced a few new details to the sculpture giving it room to evolve.

There’s something special about creating work that gets to live beyond its original moment.

Hair as sculpture. Hair as storytelling. Hair as a living, evolving medium.
