I invited Wade Guyton to do an exhibition at the Aspen Art Museum, and he didn’t have an idea at the time. He wasn’t ready. So I told him he had an open invitation to show at the museum anytime he wanted. Every once in a while I would check in and say, “Hey, do you have any ideas? You ready yet?” And he would say no.

Then one day Wade called and said, “Okay, I have an idea.” He had been sailing with Peter Fischli and asked Peter if he wanted to do an exhibition at the museum too. The idea just kept getting bigger and bigger. Eventually they took over the full museum—all six galleries, out front, and the roof deck sculpture garden. It became this massive, immersive, amazing exhibition that came from an open invitation.

I love that idea. Sometimes you extend the invitation and then you give someone the time and space to be ready for it.

Guyton's "printer drawings" consist of illustrated pages torn out of exhibition catalogues, monographs and architecture books. With the help of a standard ink printer, Guyton then adds geometric shapes to the original plates which do not relate to the illustration in any ostensible way. One shows a Suprematist composition superimposed over an abstract biomorphic sculpture, another a perforated rectangle over a Dada poster, and in another, flames crawl over reproductions of paintings. This monograph / artist's book designed by Joseph Logan and published in conjunction with an exhibition at La Salle de bains in Lyon, present three series of works.

Cheers to 📖 @piadehne on her extraordinary book on the art world (complete with Passerby bar) pre-post 9/11 (2000-2001). This is such a trip down the scene in New York with some of my favorite artists, writers and gallerists the way they were back in the day. thanks @miaenellart for the memories and inspiration! 20+ years on, who do you see/recognize?
