This week we bring you another legendary member of Miami RFC’s old guard, Mr. Wadie Zacca.
Wadie joined the black and gold as he recognized a Miami RFC shirt worn by Doug Neary at a social event in 1997. Doug knew Wade’s brother well as he shared the field with him and recruited Wadie who played until spring of 2019
Amongst his most memorable battles was the Aspen Ruggerfest in 1999, an invitation they earned after winning the 1998 Florida Cup Championship season. Everyone was committed to the goal, competing at Aspen against the best of the best. Not even a hurricane that hit Miami that week could stop them, as some drove to Atlanta Airport to catch a flight as the local airport was shut down!
Another big one was their first game against the St. Louis Bombers (Mac's old team) They beat them squarely, but Wadie was taken out of the game before the half, replaced by a 5" taller, 40lbs heavier guy, an event that demoralized him badly. However, after that game, he promised that was not going to happen again and ever since trained as hard as he could with that goal in mind!

Wadie had the luck to play in Atlanta, Chicago, N. Carolina and Minnesota. Also, when Florida had a Select-touring side (mostly filled by Miami RFC players), he went to Bahamas, Cayman, Cuba, Brazil and Brunswick, GA.

When asked about what’s so special about Miami RFC, Wadie states “The Black and Gold! Nuff said!”, and he also recalls FIJI as the best player he’s ever played with. He remembers him as the epitome of a player who gave himself to the game...the one person who could turn a game around single handedly.

Next week, we’ll interview Frank Henry, someone who apparently stayed on the field after a neck fracture, and we’ll certainly ask about that!
