Today is Odie’s #adoptaversary and I’m sharing the paper I wrote for my #animalbehavior certification about #reactivedogs.

I never had a dog before, I spent most of my life afraid of them after a traumatic attack on my sister when we were both very young. So, I guess it makes sense that my first dog would be a high maintenance, behaviorally challenged, blind dog of questionable origin.

I don’t know where Odie’s story began but somehow, he ended up at Chicago Animal Care and Control then pulled by a pet supply store in my town doing rescue. He ended up living at that pet store for six months. I met Odie there visiting the store to pick up cat supplies. I always found him in a puppy pen bouncing up and down and extremely anxious. Customers found his behavior cute, but innately, I knew this guy was stressed out.

I started spending time with him every time I went in. I would talk to Odie in a soothing voice and put my hand on his back, he would relax and lie down. I thought he was the shop’s dog. When I found out he lived there as a rescue, up for adoption, and had been overlooked for so long, I thought I could give him a better life so, I adopted him.

Six months earlier I was doing animal transport for a guinea pig rescue, and went to the city shelter to pick up a guinea pig. I visited the dog adoption room where I saw a white pile of fluff in a cage labeled “blind” Shih-Tzu. I backed away instinctively thinking, “That is one hot mess!” It wasn’t until I got Odie home that I realized he was the same dog I had seen at the shelter. We were clearly destined for each other.

Happy first Sunday 2024 🐾🐾🎊 Cleo here 💖🐾🐾 I hope you had a great start to the new year 😀 our start was a bit bumpy, my mom had a bad cold, she had a bad sore throat and was very hoarse, mom had a positive COVID Test, but only one, crazy! 🙄 luckily she’s been feeling much better since yesterday! 🙏🏻 I hope 2024 will be better in terms of health, 🙏🏻 I was very sick in 2023, see my previous posts! 🥰🥰 I wanted to give you an update 😘 Normally I would have had my ultrasound check-up at the vet clinic today, but because I’m feeling so much better, it was postponed until Tuesday next week, the good thing is, I no longer have to go to the vet clinic, 🙏🏻🙏🏻 I can go to my own vet for a check-up! 🎉 so happy about it 😃❤️ I still have to take medicine for my stomach and intestines, but that’s ok 🙏🏻 and I still get tired quickly after my very short walks! the vet says it’s completely normal after such a serious illness, I almost died 🥲🥺 but I’m a fighter and I did it!!! 💪🏻 🙏🏻🙏🏻 Many thanks to all my wonderful friends who shared my story, ❤️🙏🏻 who supported me🙏🏻❤️ and those who donated! ❤️🙏🏻❤️ Mom and I will be forever grateful for your support, you are all fantastic!!!! 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻 We would be very happy and eternally grateful to you if you continue to share my story, support me and my mom, we would be very happy about a donation, every €/$ would relieve us financially, given the shockingly high clinic costs.
