I consider myself lucky–lucky I got to call Sharron Anne my grandma. Gran Gran was not a typical grandma, never has been. She’d blast her music as she picked us up from school; playing a wide range of music. George Strait, Bob Marley, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and of course Dolly. She loved music and loved to dance. She’d tell us grandkids stories of adventures. Stories our moms weren’t always pleased to hear that we learned. Stories she’d repeat as the Alzheimer’s progressed. How she worked for the Cowboys, people she met, places she went and wanted to return to. But most importantly, she’d tell us just how much she loves us.
To the moon and back. Always.
Although most of my time with her has been affected by Alzheimer’s, she has taught me so much. Gran Gran is a reminder. A reminder to live your life to the fullest. To never take anything for granted. To dance even when people are watching. Do what makes you happy. To save every animal you see, even if it means illegally jumping a fence to do so.
I wish I had more time with her, the real her. I wish my friends got to know the true Sharron Anne. And I really wish her daughters got to experience more time as just her daughters.
I am grateful to have had so much time with her that I had. Time we were told we wouldn’t have. GranGran outlived the statistics and beat a lot of odds. This is purely due to the amount of sacrifices my Mom and Aunt Brandy took over the years. The amount of love and dedication they poured into being caregivers. There are not enough words in the dictionary to properly express the admiration and appreciation I have towards them. And I know their mommy can not wait to properly thank them one day.
This is not easy. I don’t think it ever will be. But I have comfort in knowing Logan, Wyatt, and I gained the best Guardian Angel. I can’t wait to see you again, but for now I’ll just have to turn on Forrest Gump.
