A co-founder — with François Vadepied — of Wagon Landscaping in 2010, Mathieu Gontier trained initially in fine arts, combined with Russian-language studies. He graduated from the École nationale supérieure de paysage in Versailles in 2007, and is today head of studies at the school’s Marseille campus. In his teaching, he describes an approach to design that is ‘grounded in observation, drawing, and engagement with the realities of each site’.

From this background, he retains a strong reliance on drawing as a core tool for thinking and designing — not merely as a means of representation, but as a way to explore and construct a project. This concept of designing, gardening and building, all at the same time, remains at the heart of Wagon’s philosophical and practical approach.

Mathieu oversees projects in the Paris region and in southern France, with a particular focus on grounding each intervention in its territorial and cultural context. He says that his practice is ‘based on a careful reading of sites, attentive to existing forms, uses, and perceptions. Landscape is approached as a process of measured transformation, revealing the qualities of a place while accommodating new uses.’

We look forward to welcoming Mathieu and Francois to the ALC in March, 2027

Might landscape architecture’s next form or evolution simply be a return to older ways (the Amish Barn-Raising, historic village models, gardening as social action)? Might it be less about developing new working technologies (the lie of “progress”) and more about returning to the fundamental principles of human connection and solidarity as the most truthful approach to landscape design and labor? // A Pathway at the Lyle Center // Now on index, link in bio // Finished photos by @rioaschphoenix // A workshop collaboration with @wagonlandscaping @hillworksdesign @cppla @lylecenter // Thank you @puentealameda @rennietang @onebigyard @kaseytoomey and to all the students for their hard work and labor

François Vadepied co-founded Wagon Landscaping in 2010 with Mathieu Gontier. His work, and that of the practice as a whole, is grounded in a hands-on approach that is attentive to real situations and to the gradual transformation of places.

With a background in geophysics and geographic information systems, François spent 15 years in digital cartography before shifting his career toward landscape. He graduated from the École nationale supérieure de paysage in Versailles in 2007 (where he teaches today). Since then, he has developed a practice that ranges from large-scale territorial studies to the careful cultivation of small plots.

François says that his approach is closer to that of a landscape gardener than a conventional landscape architect, in that, ‘it is based on a deep understanding of soils, plant dynamics, and long-term processes of change. Projects are not conceived as fixed forms, but as evolving frameworks capable of accommodating living systems and everyday uses. This position favours observation, adaptation, and frugality, seeking to build upon existing conditions rather than replace them. It results in restrained interventions, where design supports natural dynamics and daily practices.’

We look forward to welcoming Francois and Mathieu to the ALC in March.

It was such a joy working with the incredible students and lovely faculty at @cppla (and @cppenv) to edit, tend, and tweak the foraging gaggle at the @lylecenter. Such a delightful time of full-scale experimentation and exploration. Can’t wait to watch this garden evolve!

And thank you Rennie Tang, Nina Briggs, and Lorena Garcia for making this happen, and for being such generous hosts! Let’s do this again SOON @wagonlandscaping and @terremoto_landscape!

A look back at the final day of the design-build workshop at the Lyle Center! 🌿☀️💧

The three-day workshop was hosted at the Lyle Center in partnership with Cal Poly Pomona’s Department of Landscape Architecture, led by Professor Rennie Tang and made possible through funding from the SPICE grant. During the workshop more than 100 students came out to participate.

Students also had the opportunity to work alongside visiting landscape architecture practitioners David Godshall and Kasey Toomey of TERREMOTO in Los Angeles, David Hill of HILLWORKS in Auburn, Alabama and François Vadepied and Mathieu Gontier of Wagon Landscaping in Paris, France.

We enjoyed getting to capture the final day. A big thank you to everyone who helped make the workshop possible!

🇬🇧 Located in the heart of Paris between the City Hall and the Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais church, the « Jardin du 13 Novembre 2015 » is a solemn place of memory and peace. Designed as a sanctuary of quiet reflection, this memorial garden honors the 130 victims of the terrorist attacks that struck the city in 2015.
The garden features carefully selected flora, paths inviting quiet walks, and precise architectural elements that symbolise resilience, hope, and collective remembrance. Each detail was chosen to pay tribute to the lives lost while offering families, Parisians, and international visitors a serene space to gather and heal.
It stands not only as a poignant reminder of a tragedy that deeply marked France, but also as a powerful testament to unity, strength, and love overcoming hatred. A beautiful, essential stop to reflect and remember together in the capital.
