This might be one of our last pictures as the original seven.

And I don’t say that sadly. Maybe a little tenderly, but not sadly. Because today, our first baby is 21 years old, and we’re also celebrating Bristow Cheer and Finley bringing home Regional Runner-Up again.

It feels like one of those days where you stop for a second and realize just how much life is happening all at once.

Twenty-one years ago, John and I had absolutely no idea what we were doing. We were young, learning as we went, praying a lot, messing some things up and somehow raising this little boy who would eventually become the man standing beside us in this picture.

And in less than a week, our seven becomes eight.

Brooks is getting ready to marry the girl he loves, and that’s why this picture feels a little different to me today. For more than two decades, this has been us. Mom. Dad. Five kids. The original Tidwell seven.

There have been babies and bunk beds, ballgames and cheer competitions, church pews, family trips, late nights, loud dinners, slammed doors, apologies, prayers, celebrations, inside jokes nobody else understands (thank goodness), and a whole lot of growing up together.

That is the whole point, isn’t it? You raise them to leave. You pray they become men and women who love God, love people, work hard, keep their word and build lives of their own. And then, when they actually start doing it, you’re somehow incredibly proud and also wondering how in the world you got here this fast.

So today I’m celebrating Brooks. I’m celebrating 21 years of getting to be his mom. I’m proud of the little boy he was, the teenager we somehow all survived, and especially the man he has chosen to become.

And I’m celebrating this picture too. The OG 7.
Not because something is ending, but because something really beautiful is about to be added.

Happy 21st birthday, Brooks. We love you more than you’ll ever know. Now hurry up and marry our daughter in love. 🫶🏽
