A historic piece of climbing. One of the first hybrid routes in the world, freed by none other than @fred_nicole

Back in spring, I found myself hiding from the typical Swiss weather — a familiar companion on pretty much every trip. But this time, it turned out to be the perfect excuse to finally try this line.

It had been on my mind ever since I first watched @david_firnenburg video a couple of years ago, which I believe captured the second ascent. Seven years passed between first hearing about it and finally standing underneath it. Some lines are worth the wait.

Tucked away in a remote valley, the route is as unique as its setting: sandstone in the back of the cave, limestone towards the end, and three-dimensional climbing that keeps you guessing all the way through. And then, the final move — full commitment, hoping your shoulder decides to cooperate.

A truly special line, in an equally special place. One I won’t forget anytime soon.

One hour, three climbers, three first ascents, at over 4100 m elevation.

Dutch-aso ~ 8b+

Malik: It was actually my first day climbing up in the valley. After warming up, I had a look around and couldn’t find anything other than this piece of rock. Two tufas, running down a perfect overhanging shield, screaming for you to get on. I immediately flicked through the guide and found that it’s an open project. I was stoked. After some sussing and brushing, I left the crag that day with a newly gained obsession. The following day I couldn’t wait to get on it; I decided to warm up on it. The rhythm took over, and I got pulled into a proper try, screaming my way up it. What a feeling!

Machos reseteados ~ 8b+

Josh: On my first day climbing in pitumarca after a deeply unaclimatised flash try on the first pitch, Cocor pointed out that the extension to the classic rail traverse was yet to see an ascent. After r1 you catch your breath on a slab, mount a large tufa before ploughing up the barreling grey headwall wall running through the centre of the crag. What stands out is the diversity of climbing on the route, steep, slopy rail traversing, balancey slab climbing, 3d tufa pulling and pure crimpy face climbing. Doesn’t get much better than that! After falling on the last move chicken wings deployed, I returned the next day for a enjoyably limit battle to the chains. A perfect way to get into the flow of high altitude sport climbing. Ratty crimping has never been more aerobic!

Pichula Paso Final ~ 8b

Arlo: On one of my first days climbing in pitumarca whilst aclimitiaing to the altitude I couldn’t help noticing the tuffa extension of Pichula paso Satanico 7c+ taking it to the top of the crag. I checked out the top section, an amazing sequence riding a tuffa in to a grey shield. After some time brushing a sequence appeared on the perfect crimps with a big throw to finish. Proper hero move on bullet rock to top of an amazing line!

Note from us:

It was great to climb in such a place, we are also deeply appreciative of the ethic of open projects in the area and the tradition that the route developer names the route.
