Before I fell in love with watches, my first true passion was CINEMA. šŸŽ¬

As a kid, from the moment I opened my eyes until I shut them, I was glued to the TV. Growing up in the ’80s, I go way back to the days of renting Betamax tapes, then VHS, LaserDiscs, DVDs, and eventually making the switch to VOD nowadays.

Weekends? I could easily watch three movies at the cinema. I even had a projector in my bedroom with a 100-inch screen because, obviously, watching movies on a regular TV just wouldn’t cut it. šŸ˜‚

I’m such a movie buff that I can name an actor or director just from the movie title. And yes, I once watched 24 in 24 actual, straight hours. Don’t judge me. 🤣

Anyway, back to watches and why I’m telling you all this…

I’ve got countless movie scenes and lines permanently engraved in my brain. One of my favourites is from Mission: Impossible when Anthony Hopkins tells Tom Cruise:

ā€œWell, Mr. Hunt, this is not called Mission Difficult. It’s called Mission Impossible.ā€

And that’s exactly the spirit I’m bringing to my latest mission.

I’m on a mission to fill THAT box with cool watches. Any brand. Any price point. Absolutely NO discrimination.

Because if there’s one thing you should know about me by now, it’s that I don’t believe great watches have to come with a certain price tag, a famous name, or a particular level of hype.

If it speaks to you, deserves a spot on the wrist, and brings a smile to your face, it deserves a shot.

So, my habibis, here’s where YOU come in. šŸ‘‡

Got a watch you think belongs in that box? Something quirky, cool, underrated, independent, affordable, or just plain crazy?

TAG THE BRAND in the comments. Let’s see what deserves a spot in there.

Yalla, my habibis… LET’S GO HAVE SOME FUN! šŸ”„

A TALK WITH @walid.benla
Meet Walid Benla, journalist and creator. From technical deep dives to watch design, his approach is all about details, heritage and the people behind it all. We asked him to share the references that shaped his journey and inspirations. Here’s what he came up with:

Swipe through to discover Walid’s watch universe. →

1- Patek Philippe Ref. 1463 ā€œTasti Tondiā€
ā€œIf you were a watch, which one would you be?ā€
The Tasti Tondi has become very much synonymous with the ā€œWalid Benla taste in watchesā€, as per my community.
In June 2025, I wrote a 14-page deep-dive article/essay in my e-magazine Time-Telling about the history and identity of the iconic 1463 reference. I call it my Magnum Opus.

2- Art – Caravaggio
Watchmaking is a detail-oriented field.
I chose these two Caravaggio works, The Cardsharps and The Fortune Teller, from his deception genre, which were intended to both entertain and morally instruct the viewer not to be superficial in their observations.
A reminder of the saying: ā€œthe devil is in the details.ā€ A personal Mantra of mine when appreciating watches.

3- The People
A loved one once told me: ā€œLe centre de tout ça, c’est l’humain.ā€
The centre of all of this is us, humans.
In an era of individualism, I choose to get my inspiration from great individuals.

4- Architecture
The Alhambra, Granada, Spain.
My studies in architecture in Granada, Spain, cannot go unnoticed when it comes to who I am today. I had the privilege of being in daily contact with the Nasrid architecture of the Alhambra.
The ingenuity, geometry, beauty, and, of course, poetry of the palace helped me develop an eye for beauty.

5- Minim X Walid Benla
Full circle moment.
From reviewing to designing. My goal wasn’t to change the core design, but to build on it.
Little details like the green Aventurine dial and the subtle handwritten calligraphy on the side of the case (Each Time Has Its Calling) – as an intimate reminder to be mindful of the different stages of one’s life – allowed the Minim MN01 X Walid Benla collab to be full of life.

Hey everyone! Where do I even begin? The last 24 hours has been an absolute whirlwind.

What started off as a passion project that then progressed to a conversation with a fellow enthusiast, nerd, journalist, all around lovely friend @walid.benla . We well and truly brewed up something beautiful, meaningful and refreshing. Our vision within the watch collecting sphere has been to bring a fresh perspective, a new generation of fresh blood that appreciates these small items on our wrists that capture the fleeting moments in life, no matter if it’s good or bad, happy or sad.

What started off as two 24 year olds cooking up an idea has so rapidly blown into something way bigger than the two of us.

Thank you so much to @andys_watches for showing @vancityreynolds OUR gorgeous creation. I am well and truly honoured, stunned and humbled, all at the same time.

Stay tuned, this is a new chapter of MINIM, but there’s still so much more to come…

@walid.benla x @minimwatches MN01 ā€œArabian Nightsā€ watch ($1,794 USD, Sold Out)

Created in collaboration with Walid Benla, writer and founder of Time-Telling Magazine, the MN01 ā€œArabian Nightsā€ is a celebration of storytelling, heritage, and the friendships forged through a shared passion for watchmaking.
At its centre lies a green aventurine dial, whose shimmering and sparkling surface recalls the lush oasis hidden beyond desert sands. Long associated with prosperity, opportunity, and good fortune, green felt a fitting choice for a watch inspired by timeless tales and new beginnings.
The side case has ā€œŁ„ŁƒŁ„ ŁˆŁ‚ŲŖŁ Ų§Ł”Ų°Ų§Ł†ā€ marked, which translates to ā€œevery time has its callā€, a constant reminder that time offers no guarantees, only opportunities. The rest is ours to embrace and seize.
Limited to just 33 pieces, a number regarded as particularly fortunate across much of the Arab world, Arabian Nights honors a rich tradition of stories passed from one generation to the next.

The MINIM Ɨ Walid Benla MN01 Arabian Nights is the result of pure love for watches.

What started as a friendship between MINIM founder, Chloe Chan, and watch journalist and enthusiast, Walid Benla, gradually evolved into a shared ambition to create something deeply personal.

Both represent a new generation of enthusiasts approaching watchmaking from different perspectives, yet united by the same appreciation for thoughtful design, mechanical authenticity, and balanced aesthetics.

At first glance, the dial immediately establishes the personality of Arabian Nights.
Its Green Aventurine surface captures light with a celestial shine, creating an ever-changing landscape that recalls a rich night sky. While visually striking, the material was chosen for reasons that extend beyond aesthetics.

Engraved discreetly into the side of the case is a line of Arabic calligraphy, intentionally positioned so that only its owner can truly appreciate it during daily wear.

ā€œEvery Time Has Its Callingā€, the message was never intended as an outward statement, but as a private reminder. A reminder that not everything in life unfolds according to our own schedule. That patience often proves more valuable than urgency. That optimism has its place even during periods when life appears unwilling to cooperate. Like many meaningful traditions, its value lies precisely in its discretion.

Its exclusivity, however, is not defined by an individual serial number. Instead, it lies in the very material that gives the watch its identity. Each green aventurine dial possesses its own unique composition and distribution of shimmering inclusions, ensuring that no two watches are ever exactly alike.

To order the watch, please contact @minimwatches or myself, @walid.benla.

With love,
Walid
