You may be surprised to hear that the technology behind Boston's traffic signal system is inconsistent and a bit dated.

According to Brendan Kearney with @walkmass, that's one hurdle to better pedestrian safety in Dorchester and beyond.

Join us in Boston on Oct 25 or DC on Nov 15. More than a ride and walk, RFYL pushes for specific changes to honor those lost to traffic violence. It’s amazing how people with power react to hundreds of us on the road, armed with the truth and steeled by the fires of our love. #rideforyourlife #safestreets #visionzero #massbikes #familiesforsafestreets

Oh, it sure is Friday!!

This week, we have a conversation with WalkMassachusetts' Brendan Kearney about the state’s biggest pedestrian-safety challenges, including street design, vehicle design, speed management, accessibility, and infrastructure improvements. The discussion will explore effective safety strategies, barriers to implementation, and opportunities for policymakers and communities to make walking safer in Dorchester and across Massachusetts.

The Dorchester Reporter join us for the week's headlines. Tim Pitoniak of Ivydale plays a Tiny Dot concert.

The safety of our children as they get on and off the school bus has been one of my top priorities.

After a lot of work and close coordination with the Boston Public Schools Transportation Department, I’m proud to share that the Request for Proposals (RFP) is officially out. This is an important step toward bringing forward companies that can help us enforce one of the most important rules on our roads: when a school bus stops and the stop sign is out, you must stop. 🛑

As a parent, I know how important it is to make sure our kids can get on and off the bus safely. I also understand that with any camera enforcement program, privacy matters. That’s why I want to be clear about how this technology works. These cameras are not operating 24/7 or constantly recording the surrounding area. They are activated specifically when a school bus is stopped with its stop sign extended for the purpose of picking up or dropping off students. So if you don’t want to get caught, don’t run the stop sign.

This is about one thing: holding drivers accountable when they put our children in danger by illegally passing a stopped school bus.

I’m proud to have worked on this effort and even prouder to see it continue moving forward. Our kids deserve to get to and from school safely, and we should be doing everything we can to make that a reality.

It’s easy to default to the one-mile car ride—especially on busy mornings when every minute counts. But what happens if you wake up to a flat tire, or your car is in the shop?

Tomorrow is Walk and Roll to School Day, and it’s the perfect excuse to shake up the routine. Not only is it a great way to build confidence and teach kids lifelong pedestrian safety skills, but it also gives you twenty minutes of uninterrupted time to walk, chat, and connect with your child (and your neighbors!) along the way.

Skip the car line tomorrow and join us on the sidewalk! 👟🚲

Week Without Driving is from October 1 - October 8

We are a primary walking and transit family and I feel very comfortable doing that because we live downtown

However, one should not have to live downtown to have great transit and be able to walk to most places

If you’re not able to give up driving this week I would at least recommend that when you’re driving to somewhere at least look at what the transit time or walking time is. Think about how your day or life would change if transit or walking was the only option you had.

Also if you’re team never give up driving then keep in mind that better transit means more people will use it and fewer cars on the roads 🫶🏽 win win for all

Who remembers all the commercials about a woman (usually a mom) getting a car for Christmas and it had the big bow on top, while transit was advertised as for the poor 🙄

I def fell for it and it wasn’t until I traveled abroad and experienced public transit as a regular way of living that I started to look at life back home differently

Even then I still fell back into my car ways because cities were built for cars and it was easier.

I’m grateful for being on this side of it but there’s still so much work to do because one should not have to live in downtown to have amazing public transit

Excited for all of the work being done in our communities and for where we’re headed with transit
