Meet Mel's new best friend-- his Registered (soon to be Certified) Rabbit Groomer, Ayieta, who works both out of our new exotics vet, Tails & Scales, and her own Small Wonders Grooming Service (@smallwondersgrooming), both in Hyattsville, MD.

🐰Did you know there are Certified Rabbit Groomers? Ayieta is 1 of 3 Registered Rabbit Groomers in the US. She is working toward her Master Rabbit Groomer certification. Her professional goal is to have a rabbits 100% of the time grooming service. Mel, Paragon of Disapproving Rabbits, approved her off the bat!!❤ For more info, see Rabbit Groomers Ass'n & https://furrytailspress.com

This video shares some of the fur & skin care products we learned about today-- particularly important as aging limits mobility & increases the risk of urine scald: Gingko Biloba or Ginger essential oil (pain relief & antimicrobial), oxygenated olive oil (moisturizing) and Soos or Bag Balm, both moisturizing and a barrier against drying, urine or infections.

I did not take videos of the vet visit, but I am also extremely grateful to have Dr Echols now involved in our bunny care. She is extremely bright and instinctually explains and demonstrates her findings in a way that was just right for me & Mark.

After more than a year on metacam for arthritis, Monday Mel suddenly lost the ability to get up on all fours. We started making a cart for him (more on that later), but I really wanted to find a groomer who could clean him better than I could, maybe once per week.

Dr Echols did a thorough exam and discovered different degrees of neuropathy in each hind leg. She took x-rays and showed us how the vertebrae in Mel's back were starting to fuse. She explained this is just one more not uncommon part of the aging process. It also explained the neuropathy as it likely pinches nerves as the bones fuse. The good news is she has added Gabapentin for the nerve pain and assured us that Mel will be safe in the cart.

Ayietta & Dr Echols are also warm people: at Tails & Scales, owners as well as pets may get hugs💞💞
