Had to share images of the new permanent camera obscura at @cocohunday!

“...On the occasion of the closing reception for STRIGIFORMS, Coco Hunday and Walter Matthews have collaborated on a permanent Camera Obscura aperture to the garage door of Gallery 1. During daytime hours, viewers can experience a ghost image of the outside world, layered onto and around the works in Gallery 1. As the outside comes in–upside down and backward–Matthew’s familiar subjects become further estranged and ecstatic.”

The dark chamber feels like a poignant way to mark the new year. It’s funny, I think of the gallery as a kind of camera anyways (it’s a framing device) and now we are inside the dark chamber. Walter’s paintings were made only a couple of miles away, on a property similar to our artist-run space—the intimacy feels perfect for paintings that don’t need any further razzle-dazzle, but nonetheless thrive on a shifting context. See more of Walter’s recent work at cocohunday and @walter_maths ✨

COCO HUNDAY is an exhibition space founded by Jason Lazarus (2016) and now co-directed with Libbi Ponce (2021). Located in the Seminole Heights neighborhood of Tampa, FL, programming is anchored by solo presentations of emerging and mid-career artists. Proposals are reviewed periodically and can be sent to jasonlazarus.photo@gmail.com.

During daytime hours, viewers will be able to experience a ghost image of the outside world, layered onto and around, the works situated in Gallery 1. As the outside comes in–upside down and backward–familiar subjects both inside and out become further estranged and ecstatic. This gesture is particularly poignant as Walters subjects emerge from everyday views of his yard in Tampa, only a couple miles away from the gallery.

💥 a new development on the exhibition and gallery: 💎 a new permanent Camera Obscura element to Coco Hunday, inspired by Walter’s work, more below,
take care! -j

Closing Reception
STRIGIFORMS
a solo exhibition by Walter Matthews

Coco Hunday
Saturday January 11th, NOON-2pm
304 w Crest Ave, Tampa, FL 33603

Strigiforms marks Matthew’s second solo exhibition with Coco Hunday. Initially drawn from the immediate surroundings of his Tampa home, Walter’s paintings drift into an epic of magical realism. Subjects seem to awaken with sentience, embarking on hallucinatory journeys that intertwine pleasure and conspiracy. Through this transformation, the ordinary dissolves into a realm where desire and paranoia bleed freely.
