September 13, pressing #freedomhillvineyard Chardonnay. The story of the freedomcoon goes back to 2015. But this New 500 Liter will claim the fabled name in receiving the heart of the juice without settling or additions of any sort. The raw energy pops off fermentation in our cellar, and this became our first to bring life to vintage 2026. #willamettevalleychardonnay #barrelfermentation #vintage26 #freedomcoon

‘The autumn winds rushing
Waft the leaves that are searest,
But our flower was in flushing,
When blighting was nearest.
Fleet foot on the correi,
Sage counsel in cumber,
Red hand in the foray,
How sound is thy slumber!’

― Sir Walter Scott ‘Coronach’

My favorite tree on our property is a glorious sugar maple that, every fall, explodes in a show of fiery red, and at its best, you can see a rainbow from green to yellow to red. For us, this tree serves as a visual metronome for the rhythm of the seasons, and every October we are reminded of summer’s passing and the winter that will soon follow. Such a stark reminder of the passage of time gives an insight into a fascinating dichotomy of life, and such a season is an example to see both where we’ve been and where we’re going.

Though I couldn’t resist the coincidental name of the famed Scottish author, Ken Pahlow and Erica Landon started Walter Scott to honor two others, Ken’s grandfather and Nephew. Their spectacular and much-lauded wines are also similar to our beloved maple, in that they serve as an opportunity to honor those that came before, but also that we have a choice in front of us, a responsibility to steward our gifts and resources for the future.

At its most rudimentary, wine is fermented grape juice. But at its very heights, it can contain extraordinary human stories. Ken, who worked with a veritable who’s who of winemakers, and Erica risked everything they had to start making wines in the Willamette Valley. Their risk was heightened back in 2009 by the focus on a variety that was not famous here yet, Chardonnay. I first tasted the wines in 2017, and though they very recently came into Michigan, I’ve been drinking them at every opportunity for nearly a decade.

Today the wines are well-known, and the Willamette is becoming famous for Chardonnay as it rightfully should be. I knew the wines, and was (still am) desperate to get them in front of as many Michiganders as possible. What an honor to be the steward of these wines for you all, it’s an opportunity I cherish, and strive not to waste.

Should you trust the label or your own palate? 🍷

In Episode 17 of Bottled Up, Daniel sits down with Bertrand of Bertrand’s Wines for an inside look at the world of Burgundy.

They discuss why wine drinkers should stop chasing famous labels, how to discover great producers before the hype, and why the overlooked 2021 Burgundy vintage deserves another chance. Bertrand also shares the realities of limited allocations and his surprising connection to the Rudy Kurniawan counterfeit wine scandal.

A long overdue visit to an incredible Vineyard, X Novo. Spending time with living legend Craig Williams and his incredible team was nothing short of a magical inspiration morning!

Every time I’m in the Eola-Amity Hills are reminded of how special a place it is. Bonus- When’s the last time you took a ferry across the river to get to a vineyard? 😂

A seriously good Oregon Chardonnay: 2023 Walter Scott Freedom Hill Vineyard from Mt. Pisgah in the Willamette Valley. 🍷

Taut, textural, and beautifully precise—think lime oil, Meyer lemon, white peach, flint, wet stone, toasted hazelnut, and a salty, mineral finish. A little smoky matchstick reduction gives it that white-Burgundy-meets-Oregon energy.

For right around $70, this competes with burgundy Chablis for better value. Go get some!

Drink now with a short decant, or cellar it for the next decade-plus. Perfect with halibut, scallops, roast chicken, or anything involving brown butter and mushrooms.

So who says Gen Z doesn’t like wine!? Our kid turned 22, and stayed with us this last week. These are the bottles we shared. They even asked for bottles at night; yes they wanted to drink wine! I pushed he and his girlfriend for their favorites, but they liked them all. Cheers!
