In my newest essay for the Washington Monthly, I examine a disturbing development in US political culture that few, if any mainstream observers, have noticed: The popularity of neo-Nazi vocabulary in political discourse.

For examples, read the essay, but the nauseating reality is that neo-Nazi terminology of lunacy and hatred has moved from the fringe to the center of everyday vernacular. Even more alarming, it is bipartisan.

The midterm elections are approaching. How do you know which polls to trust? Veteran Democratic pollster Stefan Hankin, CEO of @lpstrategies, has tips on how to be a responsible consumer of political polling this fall. Perhaps the biggest question to ask: Who did the poll, and why was it conducted? Many polls not released by news organizations are meant to push a particular narrative, Stefan says. Buyer beware.

There’s something special about being a college campus in a rural community — and Washington Monthly is recognizing the value of what campuses like ours bring to the students and communities we serve.

Penn State Schuylkill has been named No. 52 among Washington Monthly’s 100 Best Colleges for Rural America, recognizing our role in helping students thrive while making a difference in our region.

As a Penn State land-grant campus, our rural setting is central to our mission. We provide a world-class Penn State education, meaningful hands-on experiences, and opportunities for students to connect with employers, organizations, and the community.

This recognition reflects the impact of our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners.

Rooted in Our Community. Recognized Among the Best.

I talked to Tina Tang @navigator.survey about her survey of "Trump regretters" - people who supported Donald Trump for president in 2024 and now regret their vote. Nearly 1 in 5 Trump voters are in this category. A common sentiment among these voters, Tina says, is that they feel "duped." They voted for lower prices and no new wars but got the opposite.

I talked to Beau Tremitiere of @protectdemocracy for this week's @wamonthly podcast. While Beau acknowledged that the threats to this fall's elections are unprecedented - so is civil society's response. Defenders of free and fair elections are ready, and citizens can educate themselves. And here's the #1 tip: VOTE EARLY IN PERSON to ensure your vote is counted.

I've written a new essay for the Washington Monthly about the damaging misuse of the word, "establishment." While the headline is a bit misleading, because I do acknowledge the existence of such an entity, the essay explores how the American political understanding of the term has become incoherent. As a consequence, "establishment," has transformed from a useful moniker into a vague slur deployed against anyone who refuses to parrot the populist line, left or right.
