“Where ink meets emotions.”

My love for annotations is a way of communication with my book and heart.
I don’t just read, I leave parts of myself behind. In every underline and margin note, there’s a thought, a feeling, a moment I wanted to hold onto. The story may end, but my connection to it lingers in ink.

$Hamnet, Maggie O’Farrell In a nutshell: In 1596, William Shakespeare’s eleven-year-old son, Hamnet, died. A few years later, Shakespeare wrote Hamlet, the play many consider his greatest work, giving its tragic hero a variation of his son’s name. Nearly four centuries later, Maggie O’Farrell encountered Hamlet at school and discovered the little-known boy behind the name, whose life survives largely as a footnote in his father’s biography. That spark of curiosity grew into O’Farrell’s novel, a reimagining of Hamnet’s death and the enduring ripples it sent through his family. My thoughts: I’m a longtime lover of historical fiction, and the premise of this novel immediately drew me in: taking the few known facts of Shakespeare’s life and weaving an imagined story around his family felt full of promise. This was my first Maggie O’Farrell novel, and I can absolutely see why her writing is so highly praised. Her descriptions of people and places are richly detailed and immersive, you’re completely transported into the world she creates. However, for much of the book, I found myself wading through pages where the story didn’t seem to move forward. Despite the beautiful prose, there wasn’t enough momentum to fully hold my attention. That changed around the 80% mark, when the novel finally struck with real emotional force. The portrayal of grief was deeply affecting, and I could clearly see what O’Farrell was exploring: how people live with loss and find their way through it. The tender yet fractured relationship between husband and wife was especially compelling, and this section became a real turning point where I finally connected with the story. While the ending packed an emotional punch, the journey to get there felt a little too long for me. That said, I can absolutely see why this book is so loved, her writing left a strong impression, this just wasn’t the five star read I’d hoped for.
