À l’occasion de l’exposition « Icônes d’Albanie, trésor du musée national d’art médiéval de Korça », le Musée des Beaux-Arts de Chambéry • @villedechambery a invité l’artiste photographe Wandrille Potez • @wandrilleptz à présenter son travail documentaire mené en Albanie, consacré à la fragilité du patrimoine religieux, des paysages ruraux et des écosystèmes. Ces réalités menacées font écho aux icônes exposées : des témoignages d’une culture et d’une histoire qui ont failli disparaître et demeurent aujourd’hui encore vulnérables.

“Eagles and Angels”
The final exhibition of Wandrille Potez’s residency in Tirana, presented at Vila 31 in collaboration with Art Explora in 2025.

During his residency, Wandrille pursued a photographic research project focused on the post-Byzantine monasteries of the Drino Valley in Albania. Through his images, he explores the relationship between heritage, memory, and the rapid evolution of the Albanian landscape.

This exhibition concludes ORAMA’s first residency program developed alongside Art Explora at Villa 31, dedicated to supporting contemporary photographic practices through cultural exchange and long-term research.

We are delighted to look back on ORAMA’s very first residency, conducted during Summer 2025 in Tirana in collaboration with Art Explora.
For this inaugural edition, photographer, writer and explorer Wandrille Potez joined @art.explora to develop a long-term research project dedicated to the post-Byzantine monasteries of the Drino Valley in Albania.
At the crossroads of photography, documentary practice and art history, his work seeks to preserve and reveal territories that are often overlooked or threatened.
This residency marked the beginning of ORAMA’s commitment to supporting emerging contemporary photography through international artistic residencies and meaningful cultural collaborations.
Thank you to Art Explora and @vila31artexplora for their trust and support throughout this first chapter.

🪶This work begins from a simple ecological fact: migration is never singular. Birds move across continents, but so do human bodies, forming a dense and often invisible network of circulation.

Birds emerge here as intermediaries. Across cosmologies, including practices such as Shamanism, they have been understood as messengers between worlds, linking sky and ground, matter and spirit, the visible and the unseen. In this work, they function not only as symbols but as agents of communication, inhabiting a threshold where language exceeds the human.

Through rhythm, repetition, and call-and-response, they suggest forms of communication beyond language: different voices, different calls, yet emerging from the same nest.

The work considers how community forms across difference, not through perfect understanding, but through listening, echoing, and responding.

“All Birds Must Be Free” proposes freedom as a condition of relation, where consciousness extends beyond the human through a field of shared sound.

Participatory site-specific performance developed during the AOS birds ringing and artistic residency.

ALBANIA PART 2
Yesterday I got home from a 10 day trip in Albania to attend the @aos_alb birding ringing artist residency in the Vjosë-Nartë Delta Protected Area, and to say it changed my life would be a bit of an understatement. For 5 days, I was surrounded by 41 of the most insanely talented and caring artists/birders/scientists/humans and spent every possible minute birding, creating, learning & laughing. The area in which we were located is one of the most important migratory wetlands in the Adriatic flyway and is home to over 200 bird species that are now threatened by the construction of the illegal Vlora International Airport and the sale of Sazan Island to Jared Kushner 🤮 for the development of a luxury “eco-resort”. Knowing that this area has the potential to change so drastically in the next several years, it was immensely special to experience and observe how artists respond to ecological disaster with their work.

After the residency, I spent several days traveling around the Albanian countryside with @st0rmpetrel and got to soak up the beauty that is Albania and its people (not to mention the insane food!!!). I’m already scheming a way to make it back to this magical country…

Now that I’m home, I’m realizing it is going to take me a while to truly reflect on my experiences at this residency. The birds were unreal. Having never truly birded in Europe before, I added 85 species to my life list (omg hoopoesssss)!!!! But more than anything, it’s the people and the memories that made this trip so special. I miss my geeky birdy friends so much already 😭 but can’t wait to find excuses to visit all of them around the globe!!

An immense and massive thank you to AOS and @besabesjana09 for organizing this incredible residency and providing all of us with the opportunity of a lifetime. I can’t wait to see all of the artworks that come out of this experience and am counting down the days until I get to see all of you again. So much bird love!!!! 💜💜💜
