First year in Uni, we were tasked to shoot a short documentary themed Social Responsibility. I wrote and directed a docu-drama titled A Voice of Hope, and what you’re seeing above is just the intro of it. The full documentary has disappeared in my bunch of archives in one of my drives, however I will share it with y’all as soon as I find it.

Fear inspired me to write this. As a young man raised by predominantly women, this was my activism and support for the fight against GBV. My hope is for a world where our grandmothers, mothers, sisters, friends, and daughters can live without the fear of being next, a world where I don’t fear for the female figures in my life.

We collaborated with an organization called the Department of Social Development, one of the organizations designed to offer support to victims of abuse.
I made a choice to include myself in the film, representing all males as well, because GBV isn’t just a fight for women only, but for men as well. I STAND IN SUPPORT OF THE FIGHT AGAINST GBV. 💜💜💜

Synopsis:
A Voice of Hope is a compelling docu-drama
that sheds light on the work of a foundation
dedicated to supporting gender-based violence, victims and survivors. Through personal narratives, interviews, and expert insights, the film aims to educate viewers about the magnitude of the issue and the transformative impact of the foundation’s initiative.

☀️ Big Little Dreams ☀️

Before The Fever Dream that was Alaska and a massive American Roadtrip there was another Big Little Dream that came true: Playing opposite @wentzellombard in a play at a festival.

Die Doodskis debuted at @vrystaat_kunstefees in July and it was every iota as warm and fuzzy (and stressful) as I wished for it to be.

I hope we do it again. Many times. With audiences as wonderful and generous. And festival staff as lovely and accommodating. Dankie, uiteindelik, Vrystaatkunstefees (Juné and Paquot @_paquot especially) vir n onvergeetlike tyd en dat julle n kans op ons gevat het!

To our fearless leader @karina.lemmer - what a gift to be guided in play by you - thank you for your heart and generosity.

To the writers of Die Doodskis; @aggro_chic and Wentzel Lombard (Afrikaans) - HOU SO AAN!

To @jacobsregop for being the all round sorter out of all things physical and emotional - jy’s n knap vark.

To @marna_artist - thank you for being an epic SM and poster designer and go-getter.

To every person who bought a ticket to support us, sent a whatsapp, a skietgebed, a pakkie droëwors etc, you are the bedrock of our theatre making existence.

Wentzel: wat n voorreg om teenoor jou te mag speel en te sien hoe jy lewendig word op ‘n verhoog. Kom ons maak gou weer so.

Behind the scenes of our short documentary 'A Voice of Hope'. I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to write and direct this documentary about gender-based violence (GBV). As a male director telling this deep concept, I knew that I had to crucially approach it with sensitivity, respect, and be mindful of the fact that this is a story that belongs to the survivors and victims, and that I had to be careful not to misinterpret or appropriate their experiences.
It was a challenging process especially since we were an all male crew handling this type of a topic but I'm so grateful to have told it and my team trusted me to lead. Together, we were able to create a film that not only raises awareness about GBV, but also honors the stories and experiences of those who have been affected by it.
