ANNOUNCING | 2026 Kate Derum + Irene Davies Awards Finalists

This year, we received applications from artists across 22 countries, reflecting the breadth of contemporary tapestry today. The 2026 finalists offer a snapshot of the ideas, materials and approaches shaping the medium, from emerging perspectives to established practices.

Congratulations to all the shortlisted artists. We can’t wait to share these works, made slowly, by hand, and with an extraordinary range of perspectives on contemporary tapestry.

The 2026 judges are Rachel Arndt, Director of Wangaratta Art Gallery; Beck Jobson, GM/Head of Studio at ATW; Ema Shin, 2026 Biennale of Sydney artist; and Anna Dunnill, winner of the 2024 Kate Derum Award.

Some details from the exhibition install of Tannic Bonds, co-curated with @omwelch, at @wangarattaartgallery. We began conceptualising this show back in 2022 and it is so rewarding to see it come together. Tannic Bonds was born out of conversations about the physical and metaphorical weight of tannins, those natural compounds found in trees and plant matter. It features work by 8 artists: @moorinabonini @d_gnidrah @kirtika.kain @cameronrobbinsart @monicaranirudhar @arti_shivanjani @jayanto_art @abdullahmisyed

Votive (Male Torso)

This is the first piece in a new body of work inspired by tamata. ‘Votive (Male Torso)’ is currently part of the exhibition Petite Miniature Textiles 2026 at @wangarattaartgallery, curated by @cara__johnson.

Petite Miniature Textiles is on now at the Wangaratta Art Gallery closing on September 13 and will tour to the @jamfactoryau in South Australia February 5 - April 25, 2027.

Votive (Male Torso) draws from the devotional tradition of tamata, small metal offerings placed within the Greek Orthodox Church as petitions for healing or gestures of gratitude. Tamata depict fragments of the body that for the supplicant are objects imbued with mystical presence.

The torso is rendered through knotted embroidery, each knot a discrete, repetitive gesture. The slow accumulation of knots mirrors the repetitive rhythm of prayer. Detail here is not ornamental; it is structural. From a distance you see a simplified torso, up close it dissolves into thousands of individual knots, an accumulation of gestures.

Petite Miniature Textiles 2026 closes this Sunday - sep 13th. It has been so exciting having my work Knots and Clots included amongst so many outstanding artists. Thanks to @wangarattaartgallery and curator @cara__johnson for the opportunity. The show will head to the @jamfactoryau gallery in Seppeltsfield next year.

One of the new works I’ve been making this year to conclude nearly 20 months of the @createsa_ fellowship. I’ve learnt so much in this time from a variety of people, and after getting too stressed in the first year, the fellowship funding and supportive grant officers helped me travel a bit slower this year and figure out what a sustainable art practice looks like for me.

The new works are for the next iteration of The Mage, which I am excited to show at the fantastic @wangarattaartgallery in March next year.

Is approximately 150cm x 100cm
And stitched by hand 🖐️ (with some fabric scraps from two different durational projects hidden under flaps - last two slides)

Last night we packed the kids into the car and made the road trip to Wangaratta Art Gallery for the opening of Petite Miniature Textiles 2026.

It was such a joy to be there in person and to see Held in Tension installed alongside so many incredible works. The level of craftsmanship, patience and imagination on display was so so inspiring. There is something very special about seeing textile art up close—the intricacy, the texture, the evidence of the hand.

We didn’t stay for long (because, well… kids), but I’m so glad we made the trip. Being part of exhibitions like this always reminds me why I do what I do, and how fortunate I am to be part of such a thoughtful and generous creative community.

A huge thank you to Wangaratta Art Gallery and curator Cara Johnson for including my work in this beautiful exhibition.
