Trevi is more than a coin toss. ✨

A palace forms its backdrop. Oceanus commands the water. And just beyond the fountain, Palazzo Carpegna holds another surprise: Borromini’s extraordinary portal, with Medusa watching from above.

Save this for your next visit to Rome. Which detail had you never noticed?

Discover the Trevi quarter as part of a private Bentley journey for up to two guests with Rome Grand Touring.

DM TREVI with your date and hotel to request availability.

Nearby set-downs depend on access and traffic. Fountain and palace admission/interior visits are separate. Bentley stock footage is illustrative.

What can poetry make from anger, grief, love — and a world in constant motion?

On Wednesday 14 October, we welcome poet, translator and Action Books editor Johannes Göransson to The Keats Shelley, where he will read from The Adorations.

Written while caring for his autistic son and his dying mother, this fierce and tender collection moves through God, death and childrearing. A mother’s body changes through cancer; a man becomes a bird; a riot convulses society. Yet alongside the violence, there are flowers, style, kissing and spells — moments from which poetry creates its own strange, paradisical language.

Göransson is the author of several poetry collections, including Summer and The New Quarantine, and a translator of some of Sweden’s most celebrated contemporary poets.

Hand-inscribed Aqueduct Rome along the lower edge, this late-19th-century watercolor has the wonderful feeling of a Grand Tour travel study. For generations, European travelers journeyed through Italy to encounter its art, architecture and ancient sites firsthand, often recording what they saw in sketchbooks and watercolors along the way. Here, the artist turned their attention to one of Rome’s great feats of engineering: an ancient aqueduct cutting across the countryside, its warm terracotta arches set against soft green fields and distant violet hills. More than a century later, we’re looking at Rome through the eyes of someone who once stood there.

Condition: Excellent antique condition, with no notable foxing, staining or damage.

Framing: Solid-wood moulding with an antiqued gilt finish and continuous foliate scroll ornament, with a narrow egg-and-dart-style inner border.

Research: An unfinished graphite landscape was found attached behind the watercolor, perhaps another study from the artist’s travels in the tradition of the Grand Tour. It has been preserved separately in a sleeve on the reverse. Late 19th-century watercolor inscribed Aqueduct Rome, depicting a long terracotta-colored Roman aqueduct crossing green countryside beneath violet hills.

A papal election comes with tailoring problems. When Angelo Roncalli became John XXIII in 1958, the white cassock selected for him was too small. The crowd was waiting, so the back had to be opened and held together with safety pins before he appeared on the balcony.

The crowd saw apostolic continuity.

Someone behind him saw the safety pins.

Grandeur, once you get close enough, becomes practical.

Sometimes it needs safety pins. Sometimes it tastes like pasta.

SWIPE➡️ 15 feet UNDER the Piazza Navona lies the remnants of the Stadio di Domiziano (Stadium of Domitian) @stadiodomiziano, built around 85-86 AD to accommodate 30,000 ancient Roman spectators 🏟️. I’ve visited the oval-shaped Piazza Navona with its iconic triumvirate of Baroque fountains ⛲️ several times before, but this is the first time I’ve ever explored the ancient stadium slumbering underneath! This is where the Romans vied against each other in sprinting, wrestling, casting javelins & hurling disci. The standard Stadium of Domitian tour is already mindblowing, but I recommend adding the special guided tour of the École Française de Rome (EFR)’s cellars afterwards @ef_rome1875, because you’ll see even more archeological excavations of the Stadium! Note: the Stadium site is closed at the moment for restoration; stay tuned for its reopening! Photography 📸: @studio.au.gant.
