Sadly, I’ve experienced all of these things. Which ones hit? Which ones missed? And are there any we need to add to the mix?

Me when I hear “I want a single tear” from a director on set LOL

LUCKILY, I did prep & managed without having to use substitution or the method. Thank God for @warnerloughlin & her technique 🙏

Having very little in common with a character can be one of the most exciting aspects of the craft of acting.

We probably haven’t experienced the events Hannibal Lecter, Neil Armstrong, or Daniel Plainview experienced. But that doesn’t mean we have nothing in common with them.

The circumstances may be completely unfamiliar, while the human impulses underneath them are not.

The need for control. The desire to accomplish something extraordinary. The hunger for power. The need to consume, possess, compete, or dominate.

These impulses exist in all of us—just at very different levels and in very different circumstances.

As Glen Powell says, sometimes the most exciting characters are the ones we have very little in common with: different lives, circumstances, relationships, and worlds.

That’s part of why Warner Loughlin created her technique: to help actors experience imaginary circumstances truthfully, without relying on personal memories or manufacturing emotion.

Your life can inform your understanding of a character without becoming the character’s life.

When the imaginary circumstances are specific enough, you’re free to experience what is happening to the character—not recreate what happened to you.

And that is one of the beautiful things about acting.

You don’t have to turn the character into yourself.

You get to become them—and in doing so, the things that make you uniquely you can still shine through.

The past shapes us, but it doesn’t have to define us.

In this interview by @buildseriesnyc , Merle Dandridge (@merledandridge ) beautifully reminds us that healing isn’t about reliving old wounds, it’s about understanding them so they no longer define us.

As actors, studying a character also means studying ourselves. Sometimes, building the foundation of a truthful character invites us to revisit our own memories—not to relive them, but to deepen our understanding of what it means to be human.

In the Warner Loughlin Technique, we explore those experiences in a safe and healthy way. Our personal history can inform our work, but we never have to recreate (or suffer through) it during a performance.

After all, we are artists. We bring our humanity with us. But when the cameras roll and we hear “action,” our job is no longer to revisit the past—it’s to live truthfully in the present circumstances of the scene, with freedom, authenticity, and joy.

If this speaks to you, drop a 💙 below.

In this episode of Actors on Actors, produced by Variety Studio, Amy Adams and Nicole Kidman invite us into an intimate conversation about their careers and their experiences as actors.

In this clip, Amy Adams reflects on the importance of preparation and how easily an actor can lose their way when trying to control a scene instead of simply living it.

As Warner Loughlin reminds us:

“The mind follows the body, and the body follows the mind.”

It invites us to reflect:

Where is your mind during your performance?

Are you trying to steer the scene toward a specific outcome, or are you truly prepared to let go?

What kind of preparation are you doing to bring your character to life?

The work of these two remarkable actresses speaks for itself. The time invested in honest, thoughtful preparation is never wasted—it is what allows an actor to let go, remain fully present, and trust the life of the scene.
