How to punish the counter when they defend your cradle from closed guard.

The solution isn’t magic. It’s awareness.

I’m attacking the cradle from closed guard to my right side with my Left Leg over Right and a sealed S-grip.

If my opponent is smart, they mirror my feet to relieve pressure.

Good.

One of the checks that appears is to their Right Upper Arm.

The Rules:

• The Frame
— Keep your Left Arm thumb down. This mimics the benefits of a similar gi grip and gives your left leg freedom to initiate the armlock.

• The Connection
— Since I’m attacking the Right Upper Arm, I leg-curl my Right Leg on their back to stay connected.

• The Slack
— I can release the leg scoop if needed. I climb my legs high and remove all space.

• The Action
— Secure your Right Leg over your Left (triangle structure).

Crucial Detail:
— Do not triangle on the shoulder.
— Below Your Left Knee must land on their Left Upper Arm (humerus).
— Your Right Leg triangles over the top.

This creates an armlock almost immediately or a compression choke (depending on how they turn their head).

How to stop opponents from posturing and standing in your closed guard (Gi or No Gi).

The solution isn’t magic. It’s awareness.

If they start to posture, my guard will open on their terms if I don’t adjust. So when I don’t have a grip, I can mirror my feet with my hands.

The Rules:

• Check your feet: Which leg is crossed on top?

• Match your hands:

— If Right Leg is over Left → Keep Right Hand closer to you (palm up). Left hand covers.

— If Left Leg is over Right → Keep Left Hand closer (palm up). Right hand covers.

The Action:

As they stand, keep the mirrored hand structure. Use your bottom leg to actively pull your knees to your chest.

One active leg creates better control than trying to force both at the same time.

Get a grip on the situation you’re in first, then your opponent.

If you don’t have grips, don’t overextend yourself and beat yourself.

Always remember, I got your back.

Rehab = Training. Training = Rehab. 💪

Credit to @chweingroff for this game-changing course I took with him years ago and the mindset. Fun fact: He’s also the one who taught me how to properly hip hinge and kettlebell swing back in the day, which sparked my journey to training and getting certified as a Russian Kettlebell instructor. I remember DM’ing my friend and colleague @warriorrestore and asking if he thought I could pass the test (which included 💯 snatches in 5 min) while I was pregnant 🤰! Luckily he talked me out of it 😂 Anyway, R=T T=R totally changed how I help people move and feel better.

Here’s the thing: Rehab is just training in the presence of an injury. It should be progressive, individualized, and goal-oriented. But too often, patients get stuck in rehab purgatory—cycling through clamshells, bird dogs, and bridges with no progression or plan to return to actual performance.

If your PT doesn’t train, they’re likely underloading you. And if you’re never challenged, you’ll never get back to full capacity.

This is me rebuilding my own pulling strength after a neck/shoulder injury that made my right side noticeably weaker. So I’m avoiding the barbell for now—but single-arm strength work is my rehab and my training.

Consistency. Intention. Effort over time.

“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants” This is one of my favorite saying attributed mostly to Sir Isaac Newton by used by many. And it’s true. Another incredible @mytpi World Golf Fitness Summit and IMO they put on the best one yet. It was incredible reconnecting with so many colleagues and friends, meeting new ones and of course learning a ton and expanding my toolbox. Even after 3 full days it feels like time flew by. As it should. Thanks to @mytpidave and @tpigreg and the entire TPI staff for putting everything together.
