Seiko X Space Brothers - Rotocall
JDM Limited Edition | SBJG023 | SBJG024

When I was young, I always dreamed of becoming an astronaut. And yep, as you can see, I ended up as just an ordinary guy living an ordinary life. But that never stopped me from dreaming. I love everything about space, galaxies, and all the sci-fi worlds like Star Wars etc.

As a watch guy mainly into mechanical pieces, I was crazy enough to buy a pair of digital watches. Why? Short answer: the design and the story behind them.

What is the Seiko Rotocall?
The Rotocall traces back to 1982 (reference A829). The name comes from its signature rotating bezel, an octagonal “rotary switch” that lets you change modes by turning it instead of pressing tiny buttons. For that era, it was incredibly innovative and user-friendly. It also became somewhat legendary because several astronauts chose to wear it on over 160 space missions, not as an official NASA-issued watch, but simply because it worked well, especially when wearing gloves.

In 2025, Seiko officially reissued the Rotocall with three production models. But the one I’m showing here isn’t any of those three. It’s a collaboration model with the manga Space Brothers, a Japan-only (JDM) limited edition available in just two versions, full gold (PVD) and monochrome. Many of you might not be familiar with Space Brothers; I wasn’t either at first. But after seeing the color design of the collab pieces, it immediately caught my eye. I looked up the story and found it super interesting. Two brothers meeting each other on the moon. That alone triggered my interest, especially since you guys know I’m a huge Moonwatch fan. I love everything about the moon missions, real or fictional.

Some might feel the price is high for a digital watch, especially when compared to Casio. But for me, the story, the design, and the rotating bezel make it worth it. I’m happy to pay for something I genuinely love within a reasonable range.

Enough talking, swipe through the photos and tell me what you think about the Seiko Rotocall.

*Special thanks to my aunt for helping me bring these watches back from Japan.
