‘Mint Choc Chip’ anyone? Available now this wonderful stainless steel Gallet by Racine Chronograph with telemeter scale dial, Circa 1970.
The stunning chocolate brown dial with vivid green luminous hour markers and hands this is one watch that pops in the sun. Its stainless steel case with slotted screw back, inside is the excellent Excelsior EP 40-68 manual-winding, column-wheel movement Signed Gallet. Fitted taupe leather strap with steel buckle.

Took my students out for dinner and nothing sucked. Dinner actually started with a lovely salad, but the pic of the sea bream (真鯛) is more interesting, no? As usual, the food at Kaze no Kura was perfect as was the service. My students learned a lot and ate well and I’m a happy professor.

A huge salad for the four of us.

We got a special course so today in addition to the baked cheese and apple slices, grapes were added. My students loved this!

The final dish (after a not pictured moussaka) was this octopus tentacle. Cooled to perfection with hummus, rice, broccoli, etc…we were unable to finish this.

North, south, east, or west, I walk 15 minutes and basically have access to anything I could need: hospitals, clinics, schools, post office, restaurants, conbini, you name it. And my fave? Shrines and temples. Today is a national holiday in Japan, Sports Day, and Mrs. Jewpanese and I took a nice walk to a local shrine and temple we rarely visit.

A vintage Honda a neighbor owns—I know I could not fit in there. 😉

Local shrine had a monument to the Russo-Japanese War. To this day, many here celebrate the victory.

This is a special tree, but I wasn’t impressed.

Back in the day, my hood was mostly farmland and it seems barley was a main crop—leading to this monument to the farmer who helped get beer made here.

This cat was NOT nice.

That blossom was huge!

Wild. Quirky. Amusing. Witty. Cumbersome.

All in one!

One of the rarest and scarcest Gallet chronographs ever made, powered by a wonderfully bizarre movement. Two date discs rotate against each other, displaying dates all the way up to 39. So, at the end of the month, you have to go all the way up until 01 finally shows up again. Humanly imperfect. And all the more charming for it.

This type of movement and dial can be found across a dozen different watches and brands. For years, we thought the loose dials popping up on eBay were fakes. That is, until 2023, when I stumbled upon proof in an old catalogue: the Gallet Big Date Chronograph was real all along.

Sometimes, the weirdest things are the most wonderful. And sometimes, the truth is hiding in an old catalogue. 🕰️

Black dial with Waterproof printing — the earliest version.

White dial — the most commonly found variant.

Orange dial — the most puzzling of them all, with its origins still waiting to be uncovered.

And that’s exactly what some collectors love most. Keep digging, piece together bits of archival information, archive clips, auction records, and personal memories. Sometimes, the smallest clues lead to the biggest discoveries.
