FAVRE-LEUBA SEA KING | c. 1960 On the occasion of World Watch Day, I wanted to share the story behind one of the most special pieces in my collection, and how my love for it began. Being a watch enthusiast for years, I’ve always been drawn to vintage Favre-Leuba watches, particularly the Sea Chief, for the heritage, craftsmanship, and history they carry. One day, while browsing a vintage watch page’s catalogue, I came across a beautifully preserved Sea Chief. It caught my attention instantly, and I knew I wanted it. I reached out to the seller, and fortunately, it was still available. But before I could pull the trigger, I lost the opportunity. The very piece I had my eyes on was eventually purchased by @dqsalmaan and gifted to @mammootty . What followed was a strange feeling of loss over a watch I had never even owned. And somehow, that missed opportunity only made me want one even more. I began searching relentlessly. Somewhere along the way, I discovered the Sea King. What started as an interest in the Sea Chief gradually turned into something else entirely. The Sea King spoke to me even more, and soon, it became the watch I truly wanted. The hunt began. Although Sea Kings weren’t impossible to find, finding one that was well preserved, beautifully aged, and free from obvious modern alterations proved to be a different challenge altogether. I wasn’t looking for a watch that simply looked new. I wanted one that carried its age with dignity, with every mark and every trace of time adding to its character. And then, finally, I found this one. It ticked every box. The dial, the ageing, the character — it was exactly what I had been searching for. This time, I wasn’t going to let the opportunity slip away. No second-guessing. No hesitation. I went for it. And today, wearing this little piece of Swiss watchmaking history on my wrist, I can confidently say that this might just be the best money I’ve ever spent on a watch. Some watches are bought. With Baori, we didn’t just unbox a watch but we unravelled 101 little pieces of Rajasthan, courtesy the vision of @fewgoodwatches & the inimitable @sebastianwatchco Inspired by the mesmerising geometry of Rajasthan’s stepwells, especially Chand Baori, this is the kind of watch that makes you stop scrolling and start looking closer. A solid silver dial, hand-etched brick by brick. Kachhi Meenakari, applied by hand. A Jaipur-inspired engraving on the movement. And because every dial is hand-enamelled, no two watches are exactly alike. Only 101 were made. Each individually numbered. And do we even need to mention that the drop was sold out before anyone could blink. Move it under different lights and the Baori almost comes alive. So here's the question for the watch lovers: Would you rather own a seasoned western brand that 10,000 people have or a hand crafted brand like Baori that's truly a representation of India?
