Yes, that’s a human leg bone she’s holding. This is a Masalai, spirits that haunt the rainforests of Papua New Guinea. Found near bioluminescent fungi, or sometimes conjoined trees, they look like ordinary human beings, and are of ‘ambiguous morality’, stealing food and throwing away the bones of the human dead.

A real pinch-me moment 🥹🎧

I had such a special day last week getting to see another side of the publishing process - the recording of the audiobook for THE LOVE CODE. Huge thank you to Rebecca for bringing Jenna’s chapters to life, and to producer Tidor (who was CHUCKLING at some lines in the book!! 🥰🙌🏼 see, I wasn’t lying when I said it was WITTY) and the DK team for letting me see the magic happening behind the scenes. I left even more excited for you all to hear it/ read it/ experience it!

THE LOVE CODE audiobook comes out on 19th November 💖🤩🎧📳🔊

Some rather wonderful news: Midnight Streets has won the 2026 Shamus Award for Best Original Paperback P.I. Novel!

I’m absolutely thrilled that George Harley’s adventures in the dark underbelly of 1920s Soho have found such a welcome on both sides of the Atlantic.

Huge thanks to the Private Eye Writers of America, my publisher Titan Books, my agent James Wills, and everyone who’s read and supported the book. And congratulations to my fellow finalists — it’s an honour to be in such company.

So, what if these three had a book baby?

💕
The Love Code was always going to be a romance, but the true Scorpio in me also loves a revenge plot 💋💋

Because of the mix of themes, finding comps has always been a bit of a challenge (it is officially comped to The Love Hypothesis and The Kiss Quotient for its nerdy STEM wit), but unofficially, I’ve landed somewhere between:

🕵️‍♀️ Mr. & Mrs. Smith for sexy, dangerous competence and finding out the person you love is also your professional rival.
⚖️ Erin Brockovich for the whole taking-on-a-corrupt-company-because-someone-needs-to-do-something bit.
💘 Nobody Wants This for two very different people falling stupidly hard for each other, despite every reason it might be a terrible idea.

Tl;dr: secret identities, questionable corporate ethics and two people who are very much not supposed to fall in love (but they do anyway 🙃).

🐴 Today’s horror is the Nucklavee ('devil of the sea') is a skinless, ripped horse ghoul from Orkney with a humanoid head; he will clamber ashore to spread disease and ruin harvests. With 'glistening muscles and veins that shudder(ed) with black blood', the Nucklavee hates fresh water, so if you cross a stream you…might be safe.💀

🦉 This is the Penchapenchi from Bengal - a vampiric owl spirit who will swoop down from the tops of the forest to drink your blood. Some say they appear in pairs and are the spirits of human lovers who died tragically - if you hear their unearthly cry you should prepare for the worst! Drawn in pen and ink, pencil and gouache, I added the separate drawing of the skull to the mouth added after scanning. 💀

What happened was, when I was walking into independent bookshops and asking booksellers to stock my book ‘The Way of the Samurai Women’, it only seemed right to buy a book too. These books got added to my pile of other books that I was yet to read, thus creating a tsundoku (積ん読) this now trendy concept of a pile of books 📚 . You’ll see some killer titles in there, all reflecting my taste and personal preference 👅 If any of you have read a title, do start a convo with me. I’m also gonna try and leave snippets of thoughts about the books I manage to read. Wonder how many I’ll get through before the year close? 🔥 🐎 🔜 🐏

It is @bannedbooksweekuk - where we celebrate the freedom to read!

Earlier this year @indexcensorship alerted us to a Greater Manchester secondary school censoring scores of books and taking disciplinary action against the librarian who stocked them.

My book, The Book of Non-Binary Joy - published by @jkpbooks - was on that list. They described the list as books with inappropriate content, which is a huge mistake, all the books on the list celebrate freedom and acceptance.

Banned Books Week UK is an annual celebration of the right to read freely in the UK and beyond. At a time where books are being increasingly challenged, taken off shelves or targeted due to the ideas they hold, Banned Books Week Uk brings literature lovers together to celebrate the freedom to read.

How to get involved:
Buy and Read Banned Books
Request banned books at your library
Share them at book clubs

In recent times, samurai have been made famous by movies, manga, video games, even fashion. They've become macho icons, but that's only part of the story. Some samurai, particularly those who remained steadfast in the clan household, were women. Some were even warriors.

Join me on my journey as I explore samurai practices, culture and myth, delving into a world full of nature worship, Zen Buddhism, Shinto, martial arts, meditation, poetry and pilgrimage.

All the while, I discover more about my own Japanese and samurai heritage, which my late mother, Akemi, had been so proud of. I also share stories of contemporary samurai-spirited women who have fought, survived and thrived against the odds.

The go-to Japanese specialist Christopher Harding has said this about my book:
‘An unexpectedly tender book: part search for the lost women of samurai history, part love letter to a remarkable mother. Rimika Tanaka writes with warmth and candour about grief, belonging and the courage it takes to build a life between cultures. Rich in wisdom and hope for bicultural families, and full of interest and surprise for everyone.’

I'm the author Rimika Tanaka @rimi_monster. In my book, The Way of the Samurai Women, readers will find examples of inspirational samurai women and a way to live more fully in our busy modern lives.
