🎥 THE NEXT SHIFT is OUT NOW on Tubi. 🎬⚠️

This one means a little more to me than just saying “my music is in a movie.”

I first saw this film at the premiere screening last December & walked away proud to be connected to it. Not “good for an indie” good either… just a really good film. Powerful performances, grit, tension, heart & a story that feels like it came from somewhere real af.

Big salute to director @AdioAsh on his directorial debut (can’t wait to see what’s next), my brother/comrade @VictoriousCreates, producer on the film & a dope filmmaker/artist in his own right, who reached out during production, told me he wanted to place a couple of my songs, got the publishing info & made those placements happen. Salute to the whole cast & crew @jordynowens0 @matthewtaylorzu @markmcneiljr @olivierpolica @jimmygaryjr & everybody who brought this thing to life. 🎥

Hearing my music inside the film hit different. @WeekendMoney banger “Money Machine” (NE$$ + @AmarBagh) comes in at a major turning point. Then “Vice Grip” from myself + @BabyJbiz / @TheSystemDontWork plays as the film closes & rolls into the credits.

That’s what I love about making art: everybody brings their piece & the final thing becomes bigger than any one person involved. Film, acting, writing, music, cinematography… separate disciplines becoming one story.

Salute Baby J & Baghdaddy for the soundscapes I get to write these stories over.

Most importantly 🗣️ GO WATCH THE MOVIE 📢

Independent art only stays alive if we actually support it. Not just repost it or say “that’s dope.” Sit down & really give it your attention.

🍿 Get some popcorn. Turn the phone off. Dim the lights. Put it on the biggest screen/best speakers you got & give yourself the closest thing to a proper theater experience.

The Next Shift is streaming FREE on Tubi right now. Link in bio.

Then come back here & tell me what you thought in the comments.

Trust me… this shit is dope. 😂🎬 Thank me later.

Stories about our people. Made independently. Available to the people.

& that shit matters. ❤️🖤💚⚠️

In the Studio with Jordan Watson

Jordan Watson’s paintings begin with a solid ground of colour laid across unprimed canvas. From this field he builds the composition in oil and pastel, with the weave of the material adding texture and depth. His scenes and figures emerge from the saturated picture plane, with expressive mark and gesture, replete with a sense of movement and rhythm.

Often working on the floor of his New York studio, surrounded by buckets of paint, Watson approaches the canvas from all sides. Painting horizontally allows him to remain spontaneous and direct, applying oil and pastel into the wet surface. Drips, scuffs and reworkings remain visible in the finished piece, a record of the work’s making.

Watson draws on modernism, surrealism and the graffiti vernacular of the 1980s and 1990s - a dialogue with Kerry James Marshall and Peter Doig, infused throughout by the speculative registers of Afrofuturism. There is also an autobiographical dimension, drawing upon memory and family history from his formative youth in south side Jamaica, Queens.

An entirely self-taught painter, Watson came to the easel after building Love Watts, a platform that places emerging artists before an audience of millions.
