Entering into 3rd week of Fluxus mail art project which focuses on scores for communing/honoring/engaging with water in unexpected ways. The tenets of Fluxus are mantras for my life—dissolving boundaries between art and life, art and community and prioritizing the experience, rather than the end game/object. My rules of engagement are simple. Morning communion on the dock with the lake. Make 1 photo daily. Create 1 water score daily. Have an IRL encounter with a postal employee—preferably Patrick who grew up on Lake Granbury. Imagine the machines and hands that will touch my postcard as it travels on a journey to New Mexico. Imagine how deep listening and deep witnessing could change our relationship with nature, with water, with all those who inhabit this place. It’s such a treat to see “Land Medicine” in print! I just got my copy of “Soils Turn: A Field Guide to Artistic Earthly Engagements,” and my collaboration with Johannes Lehmann is included in th “Metabolizing” section. From concept, collaborator, medium and site, the artists in this new encyclopedia of soil art are working with soil in really beautiful and profound ways. I’m honored to be in the publication, along with so many artists I have admired from near and far, including Ithaca’s very own Soil Factory @soilfactory_air, @cornellmfa_art Tiegor Mentor @marymattingly, and @cornellaap visiting artist @mbwang! Many thanks to @ecoartspace @wattsartadvisory @alexandra_toland for including my work in this publication and writing so thoughtfully about this process of making art with soil.

Il libro "Soils Turn" è pubblicato da ecoartspace e Bauhaus-Universität, è una pubblicazione di ampio respiro che esamina gli approcci artistici contemporanei al lavoro con il suolo. Il libro presenta le opere di trenta artisti in evidenza e include una raccolta di saggi e un repertorio di 140 artisti che rappresentano una varietà di pratiche che riflettono la diversità dei suoli.
Sotto la pressione del cambiamento climatico, della sovranità alimentare, dell'inquinamento e della perdita di biodiversità, l'impegno artistico nei confronti del suolo è ora più che mai necessario. "Soils Turn" è una guida pratica per curatori, scienziati, studenti, responsabili politici e organizzatori di comunità interessati a modi creativi di pensare e lavorare con il suolo.

Alexandra R. Toland è professore assistente per le arti e la ricerca presso l'Università Bauhaus di Weimar, dove dirige il programma di dottorato in arte e design. Ha conseguito un master presso l'Istituto d'arte olandese (DAI) e un dottorato in pianificazione del paesaggio presso la TU-Berlin come borsista DFG nel gruppo di ricerca Perspectives of Urban Ecology.

Patricia L. Watts, fondatrice di ecoartspace, ha curato oltre trenta mostre di arte ed ecologia ed è editrice delle pubblicazioni di ecoartspace dal 2020.

Zum Jahresende möchten wir unsere Aufmerksamkeit nicht auf die unzähligen Ungerechtigkeiten richten, die im vergangenen Jahr geschehen sind, sondern auf die guten und inspirierenden Dynamiken. Vor allem haben wir gespürt, dass es sehr hilfreich ist, Netzwerke untereinander aufzubauen, um kreative und konstruktive Kräfte zusammenzubringen und Werte und Strategien wie gegenseitige Hilfe, Solidarität, kollektives Handeln sowie Menschen- und Naturrechte weiterzuentwickeln und zu bewahren.

Wir möchten uns bei allen bedanken, die sich im vergangenen Jahr mit so viel Energie und Leidenschaft für die Verteidigung dieser Werte und Prinzipien eingesetzt haben, die auf die Straße gegangen sind, direkte Aktionen durchgeführt, ihre Stimme erhoben und Veranstaltungen organisiert haben, um auf die wichtigen Probleme aufmerksam zu machen.

Soils Turn: A Field Guide to Artistic Earthly Engagements was officially launched on Saturday in Berlin. I am so delighted to be included in this very comprehensive survey of 175 contemporary creative practices that engage with soil material, soil memories, soil sites and soil creatures.

“It is a tribute to the diversity and endurance of earthly artistic agendas by, for and with artists, curators, educators, researchers, community activists and concerned planetary citizens committed to soil” says its co-editor Dr Alexandra Toland

Many congratulations and gratitude to @soilkin_alex @wattsartadvisory and @ecoartspace for this beautiful tome and the hours of hard work that brought it to fruition. The layout and images are gorgeous, and the book’s paper buttery in my hands. I can’t wait for some quiet time over Christmas to settle down and read all the articles by a slew of great writers too. What a treat.

Alex and Patricia will present the main ideas of the book in a hybrid live x Zoom presentation, accompanied by a soil soundtrack by The Hercules and Leo Case, a live soil sound performance by Samuel Johnstone and Sofia Fernandez, peat plant cuddles by Daniel Hengst, and edible clays by masharu.
