How do you break a mile world record that stood for 27 years? With a new physiological secret, or something else?

In 1999 Hicham El Guerrouj ran 3:43.13 in Rome. On 18 July 2026 Josh Kerr ran 3:42.66 in London: 0.47 seconds faster, or 0.21%.

A new Perspective article in the journal Sports looks at what changed in those 27 years. It is not an experiment. It analyzes the publicly reported details of Kerr's "Project 222", named after the 222 seconds he was aiming for.

What the study found
The demands of the mile were already known in El Guerrouj's day:
- aerobic capacity,
- running economy,
- how fast your oxygen uptake rises,
- and anaerobic speed.

Kerr's team built a system around that one goal:
- custom spikes,
- pacemakers plus pace lights on the rail,
- wearables for heart-rate variability and sleep,
- altitude training in Albuquerque with a hypoxic bedroom of about 12 hours a day,
- and a full-time chef with sweat-sodium testing.

Every part has a plausible mechanism. But the public data cannot show which part delivered how much of the 0.47 s.

How to read this as a runner
Copy the order, not the gadgets. Start with what your event demands and with consistent training, recovery and health.
Only add a tool when you can name the limit it fixes. And drop any metric whose measurement error is bigger than the change you are trying to see.

Keep in mind
This is one athlete and one race, analyzed from public sources such as race reports and manufacturer material. The team's internal data is not public, and the record was still awaiting official ratification when the article came out. So cause and effect cannot be separated.

Swipe through to see how a 0.21% margin is built.
