Trailblazing young female surfer Indiphile Osinachi from Durban, South Africa was at @thewave Bristol recently on her UK trip.

Indi is a remarkable young woman who came through our programs growing up in one of the toughest neighbourhoods in Durban, South Africa. She has represented South Africa twice at the ISA World Junior Champs (El Salvador and Brazil). She is now 19 and studying Law in Cape Town.

Huge thanks to The Wave in Bristol for making her first ever wavepool experience so special. Indi was in the UK for a SNSC fundraiser in London. She also got to surf Croyde Bay.

The Wildlife Trusts has just issued a stark warning: government inaction on nature access is now a public health risk.

Their new report finds 44% of English constituencies have significant numbers of homes more than 15 minutes from green or blue space - and that the crisis is worst in our most deprived communities.

They’re right to sound the alarm. But we’d add one thing: when we talk about ‘nature access’, water often gets left out of the conversation. Rivers, lakes, coastline, a place to swim or simply sit by moving water - these aren’t nice-to-haves. They’re some of the most powerful tools we have for physical and mental health.

Blue health shouldn’t be a privilege.

That’s why access to blue space sits at the heart of everything we do at One Blue World. We believe everyone should be within reach of water that makes them feel better - not just those lucky enough to live near it already.

The Wildlife Trusts are calling for riverside access to become a statutory right. We’re right behind them.

After 2 years of being completely consumed trying to land one of these it’s such a relief to finally shake the monkey off my back. I’ve come so close so many times so I think it would have always been a big disappointment if I never made one but also it’s satisfying that I did it with a fully unbroken spin and on a thruster which was pretty important to me. Thanks to everyone who encouraged me to keep trying them and made nice comments generally about my surfing. My favourite bit of the video is Rita’s reaction on the wall after I ride it out , she’s seen in real time just how many attempts this has taken …… Riding 5’8 Gladiator by @cbradleysurf glassed by @woodenstuffproject - The 2 Chris’s making average surfers look decent for a long time now.

I’ve just completed 100 Days of Blue - the annual Blue Mind practice started by @wallacejnichols in 2014.

I was curious. Would I learn anything? Would it really make a difference? And, if I’m honest, my competitive streak kicked in too. I’d set myself a challenge, I really didn’t want to miss a day and that was my initial motivation.

But somewhere along the way, something changed.

10 things I’ve learnt…

1 - The days I least wanted to go were usually the days I needed it most. Busy, tired, overwhelmed… this was when blue made the biggest difference.
2 - Easy access is an enormous privilege. I live seconds from a river. When I was away for work the challenge was harder. And that’s without overlaying other potential barriers like a disability. It really hit home just how unequal access to blue can be.
3 - You don’t have to get wet. I love dipping, but a walk beside water shifted how I felt too.
4 - Small blue counts. It doesn’t always have to be a big adventure. Ten minutes sitting by blue can be enough.
5 - The same place is never the same. Tide, weather, light, seasons - and me. Same place. Different blue.
6 - There’s also joy in finding new blue. Tidal pools, river spots, urban waterways - the challenge made me explore.
7 - I started actively looking for water. And once you look, you notice it everywhere.
8 - Making it easy made it a habit. A run, a walk, sitting by a pond. Small and simple works.
9 - Blue is even better shared. Friends, husband, my teenagers… well mostly! 😆
10 - What started as a challenge became a joyful part of my day.

At the beginning I wondered if I could do 100 days. At the end I wondered why I would stop?

Maybe that’s my biggest takeaway. Wellbeing doesn’t always need to be another big thing to fit into our lives.

Sometimes it can be a little blue habit that simply becomes part of the day. A small moment of conscious water connection and quiet reset.

Go outside. Find some water. See what happens. 💙
