Beyond hope into the ground we step on, The Palimpsest is a contemporary art exhibition about what we will build, what we could have built, Africans having been left to create, design and imagine our society for ourselves as we saw it fit. A motherland reimagined without the interruption of colonisation and a people free of its burdens, free to engineer society in the ways they see fit. This exhibit takes young black female and male artists from around South Africa and lets them rethink and redesign themselves and their society. Producing linocut print masterpieces, pencil drawn photorealistic recreations of Sarafina and acrylic paintings that represent the re-engineering of our world.

Scenes from our most recent and final live podcast at Gallery 21 for the exceptional contemporary African art exhibition we currently have on show. Joined by 2 excellent young African artists, @aushie_art and @wavu.za who are part of the current group exhibition alongside @rick_baloyi and @hlavu_ngobeni_art. This was a big day as Gallery21 bid farewell to its beloved art loving and art collector audiences in favour of becoming a serious beacon in the Johannesburg art landscape. Do not worry, we will certainly give you more info as it becomes available.

🌻❤️ My heart is so full of gratitude! I had such a beautiful day at the Absa L’Atelier hosted by @absa_group , surrounded by amazing artists, creativity, and so much positive energy. Thank you to everyone who attended, participated, and made the day special. I truly appreciate the opportunity to be part of such an inspiring space. May we continue to grow, support one another, and open doors for more African artists. Here’s to more beautiful moments, more opportunities, and more reasons to keep creating! 🎨✨🙏🏾

@wavu.za
Born and raised in Pretoria, Vhuhwavho Mashau's practice is shaped by everyday life, community, spirituality, and the people and environments that have influenced her. Drawing inspiration from social observation, architecture, and cultural traditions, she transforms ordinary moments into visually rich stories that preserve memory while imagining new futures.

She contributes to our contemporary African art exhibition, The Palimpsest, as we rewrite Africa's old narratives through paint and brush. Join us on the 26th of September for a live podcast and walkabout with the artists.
