The Jack at 50. ⁣

When it left Stockton-on-Tees in 1976 the brothers were still living and in peak form. Jack had been at it for 40 years, his brothers for 31. Queen Elizabeth II turned 50 that year. Jimmy Carter was elected President at 52. They’re dead now, all of them. ⁣
⁣
With not all that much care and a little luck this one could still be on the road in 2076, assuming there were still roads to ride on and air to breath. Your mileage may vary. ⁣

For the record I am a horrible bike mechanic and there are no old school bike shops close to me. Compounded on the fact I like goofy set ups and a strong allegiance to us made bike parts. So, amazingly, i was able to install and adjust my new Campy 10 speed brifters to my 2x8 drivetrain with an old 8 speed shimano xt rear derailuer. Perfect shifting. If Mike Varney , who built these wheels, and owner of @blackmtncycles was closer my problems would be over. Many thanks to @californiatravis for traded parts from @paulcomponent , @whiteind for the cranks, bb, headset and hubs. 50cm @curvecycling carbon Walmer bars. Squeezed a 52 mm tire in and don’t think i can go bigger. #alpineluddites #bikepacking #gravelbike #dropbarmtb

It’s feast or famine around here this season. My big summer trips are back to back. Last week @pamlikestobike and I visited @rivbike and had a ball with them. This week we take our Rivendell mixtes to the top of The Mitten where we will…well, you’ll have to wait and see!

These @waxwingbagco panniers are DREAMY - so easy to attach to the rack, beautiful to look upon, and they have so much room. They are a custom order, sized to paper grocery bags, which turns out to be exactly perfect for me. I have pared down as much as I can, but I still need all these bags hanging on the bike, dear Reader. Dave kept the pattern and you can order your own set, if you are so inclined.

This rig is really upgraded for ‘26 after last year’s first-ever bike camping trips. Besides new, larger panniers, we have: @velocityusa Cliffhanger rims in a deep custom color, Rivendell Rapid Rise derailleur, Rivendell Silver 3 cranks, anodized by @ashley.anodized.it ,Rivendell Silver shifters, and drive train with higher gearing.

The wildfire smoke seems to be clearing out just in time; we’ll be hitting the road and meeting some friends tomorrow. Praying for a safe and memorable trip. See you soon!

I was lucky enough to attend a full day workshop with the delightful and talented @erinspencerart on Saturday. We had the perfect plein air day but sadly not a cloud in the sky because Erin paints the most delicious clouds. So honored to spend the day with such talented and generous creatives. We painted in the meadow, at the beach and then had a little appreciation session right there in the grass! A day well spent. Note to self: more workshops! 🎨

Daniels set of bike bags for the upcoming Tour Divide. He actually lives 25 minuets away. His uncle is a ranger on mt. Kathadin in Maine. These are to fit on his @blackmtncycles La Cabra drop bar mtb! Mikes bikes are always well done and if i needed a new bike he would be the first place I go. I have one set of wheels he built. Customers that know us both, I’m sorry, mention how similar we are. Not sure if thats a compliment or not.

Daniel rides a 22” frame and this is a huge frame bag. Built in x pac x50 jungle camo with duck hunter trim colors. There is one vertical velcro divider in the bag to keep it from bulging. The coyote web is from @cordurabrand . Number 10 ykk zipper. 13 ounces

The handle bar bag is built in Ultra 200 with hot pink 11 oz Cordura abrasion panel. The daisy chain under the compression straps is fully backed up with 1.5” web sewn behind. It has aero bar attachment points, the coyote web and voile straps. The leather lash tabs are cable spacers. Weighs less than 11 oz.

The seat bag is 5” top to bottom. It is smaller than most, so it actually doesn’t swing around. I can’t stand seeing huge seat bags swing on a bike. I dislike huge seat bags.l. A set of small panniers would work better than a huge seat bag for bike packing. However, if you do need a huge seat bag buy one from @waxwingbagco or @ronsbikes . The old Carradice style is ideal for big loads. This one is tough enough for a few million miles and weighs 10 oz. That’s 33 ounces total for the three bags. All of these bags are better sewn than @brettstepanik frame bag i built him in 2016 that has 8000 miles of racing on it. My first season of touring and bike camping taught me many things. The big takeaway was that I simply needed larger panniers. I worked with Dave at Waxwing Bag Co, who made me the Barbie Dreamhouse set of my dreams. It has all the functionality I wanted, plus some that I hadn’t thought of, and I got to choose the colors. A happy flamingo pink with a buttery neutral to make it reasonable…I think we nailed the project, don’t you?
