Get to know Alex Ehmer, whose sculptural work is featured in The Anatomy of Things, opening this Saturday at Upper Market Gallery. Alex Ehmer (b. 1996, San Francisco, CA) is a mixed-media artist based in San Francisco whose practice combines material experimentation with investigations into nontraditional objects and forms. Working primarily with wax, latex, clay, textiles, and sourced or discarded materials, they explore themes of discardment, repair, bodily vulnerability, and transformation through sculptural processes that blur distinctions between care and damage. Drawing from psychological, medical, and sociological frameworks, their work often incorporates clinical aesthetics, participatory elements, and time-based transformation to examine how lived experience is processed and externalized through material. Ehmer received a BFA in Printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2019 and is currently pursuing an MFA at California College of the Arts. Their work has been exhibited at 127010, 500 Capp Street, Bass & Reiner, MRKT Gallery, Goodmother Gallery, Induction Gallery, Side Bitch Projects, Uncool Gallery, Upper Market Gallery, and SOMArts. Alongside their studio practice, Ehmer maintains an independent curatorial practice focused on exhibitions and arts programming throughout the Bay Area, collaborating with artist-run spaces, galleries, and nonprofit institutions. Upcoming exhibitions include group presentations at ICA San José and YBCA in March 2027, as well as a solo exhibition in Oakland in January 2027. • • • • • Alex Ehmer Fat, 2026 Wax on board 40 x 40 inches On view at UMG October 17 — December 12

The Anatomy of Things — opening this Saturday, October 17th, also features the work of Jennifer Stuart, a multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores the intersection of contemporary textiles, painting, and drawing. Inspired by the natural world and by “reality” itself, Stuart is less interested in creating static images than in engaging the viewer in the flow of time. Originally from New York, she has lived and worked in San Francisco, California, for over 35 years. Jennifer attended Rhode Island School of Design, where she received a BFA in painting, and Columbia University Teachers College, where she received an MA in arts education. Her achievements include a residency at the Lucid Art Foundation in the fall of 2025. This fall she will present two group shows — one at Tama One in Olema, California, and one at Upper Market Gallery in San Francisco — followed by a solo show in November at Bolinas Gallery in Bolinas, California. Alongside her studio practice, Stuart’s belief in the power of art education is reflected in her decades of teaching. Presently she is the Head of Youth and Family Programming at Art + Water in San Francisco. She has consulted with numerous nonprofit organizations developing innovative arts education initiatives, including Art + Water, the California College of the Arts, Mills College, and several San Francisco private schools. In 2000, Jennifer co-founded the nonprofit Out of Site (now known as Youth Art Exchange). In 2025, she developed the Curiosity Exchange, a guided program to reconnect adults with their curiosity. She is also a co-founder of the artists’ group Sounding Board, established in 2025. • • • • • Jennifer Stuart Engender Watercolor painting printed on fabric and embroidered 42 x 42 inches On view at UMG October 17 — December 12 “My art begins in the act of being present in the world. I’m interested in taking myself, and in turn the viewer, outside of the everyday and into a state of curiosity and reflection. My work resists stillness: I want each piece to reveal the layers of reality we only notice when we slow down, look closely, and imagine the unknown. Slow Burn by Alex Ehmer is now on view at Lista Studios in Brooklyn through September 20. Ehmer was selected through Uncool Gallery’s Solo Show Open Call, an ongoing program supporting artists through a solo exhibition in NYC. Working across sculpture, installation, and photographic transfer, Ehmer brings together works from the ongoing Candles series, where beeswax becomes a material for thinking through memory, care, bodily vulnerability, ritual, and transformation. Soft, responsive, and continuously capable of change, wax holds traces of touch, pressure, heat, and time. The jurors and curators have made their selections, and now we're excited to announce our preview art sale and opening events. There are two evenings, and two ways to come. All Form No Function celebrates installation and sculpture that explore space beyond utility. We are interested in works that create immersive environments, experimental sculpture studies, objects that question the assumption that everything must do something. In a culture obsessed with optimization, efficiency, productivity, and purpose, this exhibition celebrates the unnecessary. We are showing sculptures and installations that prioritize presence over performance. On Sep 18, 7-9pm, join us for a special Collectors Preview before the exhibition opens to the public. Meet the artists and hear directly about their work, hear from the curators about the ideas behind the show, and learn about Reset Art and what we're building. An art consultant will also share practical advice on how to look at, think about, and start collecting work by emerging artists—especially if you're new to collecting. All artwork will be available at a special 10% preview discount, and your $25 ticket goes entirely toward any artwork you purchase. Come have a drink, meet some great artists, discover work you love, and maybe leave as a collector. And on Sep 19, 4-7pm, please join us for the free opening event.
